Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, communications, or a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • At least two years of professional experience supporting and working with upper-level management, preferably in public affairs, government relations, or a legislative environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Initiative and the ability to exercise independent judgment, make decisions, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage priorities and navigate a fast-moving, dynamic work environment.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the Director’s calendar and schedule meetings with internal and external stakeholders for the Director and Associate Director.
  • Coordinate University engagement in Olympia, on campus, or in legislative districts for University leadership, faculty, and staff, including scheduling with legislative offices, state agency officials, and key stakeholders.
  • Complete travel reimbursement and ProCard verification documents for the Director and Associate Director, track invoices and expenses, and oversee office operations and supplies.
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director with state lobbying activities by researching and analyzing issues, tracking legislation, monitoring hearings and briefings, preparing briefing materials, and engaging internal and external stakeholders on University priorities or legislative requests.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with legislative staff.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual state lobbying reports and help ensure compliance with state ethics requirements.
  • Support coordination and management of campus engagement with state government, including legislative briefings, session advocacy days, receptions, legislative tours, and similar events.
  • Assist with creating briefing documents, talking points, and advocacy materials.
  • Develop content for and assist with populating the Office of State Relations website and UW in Your Community.
  • Craft day-to-day and project-specific correspondence to legislative offices, the UW community, and key stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of Washington State legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience interning or working for a state elected official or in state government.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting academic research and/or public universities.
  • Knowledge of Washington State public policy issues and geography.
