Requirements
  • Requires an AA/AS degree or a minimum of 15 years of experience in claims auditing, quality assurance, or recovery auditing.
  • Requires one of the following certifications: Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Coding Specialist, Certified Inpatient Coder, or Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist.
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of experience working with ICD-9/10-CM, MS-DRG, AP-DRG, and APR-DRG.
Responsibilities
  • Audit inpatient medical records on claims paid using DRG methodology, including case rate and per diem, and generate complex audit findings for recoverable claims.
  • Review DRG coding using medical records and attending physician statements from acute care hospitals, including complex cases using APS-DRG, APR-DRG, AP-DRG, MS-DRG, or TRICARE methodologies.
  • Analyze and audit claims using advanced medical chart coding principles, Official Coding Guidelines, Coding Clinics, ICD-10 Alphabetic and Tabular Indices, and complex clinical guidelines.
  • Apply advanced ICD-10 coding expertise, clinical guidelines, and industry knowledge to substantiate audit conclusions.
  • Use audit tools, auditing workflow systems, and reference information to make audit determinations and generate audit findings letters.
  • Validate the accuracy and quality of lower-level auditors’ work, including audit concepts, claim identification, and documentation such as letter writing.
  • Identify new claim types and potential claims outside the existing concept, including readmissions, inpatient-to-outpatient cases, Hospital Acquired Conditions, Preventable Adverse Events, and Never Events.
  • Suggest and develop concept, process-improvement, and efficiency recommendations.
  • Operate independently and autonomously with limited oversight.
  • Perform secondary audits on claims reviewed by other DRG coders to identify missed opportunities and gaps in foundational audit knowledge.
  • Collaborate with management to improve selection criteria.
Desired Qualifications
  • A BA/BS degree is preferred.
  • Experience in a vendor-based DRG coding or clinical validation audit setting, hospital coding environment, or quality assurance environment is preferred.
  • Broad, deep, and specialized knowledge of medical claims billing and payment systems, provider billing guidelines, payer reimbursement policies, billing validation criteria, and coding terminology is strongly preferred.
  • An RN license is strongly preferred.
