Requirements
  • A graduate degree or equivalent professional experience is required, and a bachelor's degree is required.
  • At least five years of experience as a head of human resources, including direct partnership with senior leadership to develop, align, and implement human resources and organizational development strategies.
  • At least ten years of experience in human resources or related functions.
  • Commitment to the racial justice mission of the Legal Defense Fund.
  • Significant experience overseeing high-performing, compliant human resources operations throughout the full employee lifecycle, aligned with human resources best practices and using a data-driven approach to continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of employment law and compliance requirements in the Legal Defense Fund's jurisdictions, including applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience translating strategy into execution and driving measurable outcomes.
  • Experience communicating effectively with various audiences.
  • Experience building relationships, influencing stakeholders, and gaining credibility with colleagues at all levels.
  • Experience with employee experience and culture programs.
  • Experience with problem-solving, conflict resolution, coaching managers, leading human resources teams, and ensuring the human resources function operates effectively and consistently in alignment with organizational needs.
  • Proficiency in general office technologies and experience with a human resources information system.
  • Fluency in human resources data analytics.
  • Experience operating in complex, matrixed environments, particularly in legal or advocacy settings, including support for indirect management structures and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to rebuild or evolve human resources functions into trusted, strategic, and approachable partners.
  • Experience navigating employee relations matters, including nuanced dynamics and sensitive investigations.
  • Based in New York, New York, or willing to relocate there.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly for work, including to Legal Defense Fund offices in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
Responsibilities
  • Build a strong human resources team by investing in staff and filling vacancies with top talent to establish a capacity-based structure that supports the organization's vision.
  • Coach and champion the team, supporting staff in capitalizing on their strengths, striving for excellence, and delivering a high level of service to staff across the organization.
  • Execute management practices that drive accountability and goal attainment.
  • Implement change management practices to strengthen core human resources practices and evolve the function into a proactive, consistent, and trusted partner to staff and leadership.
  • Set and monitor goals for all team members in conjunction with other managers.
  • Establish service standards and ensure responsive, high-quality internal client service.
  • Refresh, implement, and report on a comprehensive talent strategy and strategic plan aligned with organizational goals and plans.
  • Evaluate department operations and implement improvements that modernize operations for increased effectiveness and efficiency across the employee lifecycle.
  • Ensure compliance and consistent application of compliance practices across human resources functions, including employment laws, regulations, and internal policies; human resources information system data integrity; accurate, on-time payroll in partnership with Finance; and accurate employee classifications.
  • Establish metrics and dashboards to measure workforce health, engagement, retention, performance, and other critical data points, and implement data-driven decision-making and analytics across human resources functions.
  • Lead tactical execution of human resources initiatives while ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee human resources information system implementation, optimization, and data integrity.
  • Maintain and update employee handbooks, policies, and procedures with the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel and Risk and Compliance.
  • Identify recurring organizational needs and develop policies to drive consistency, support decision-making, and align with organizational priorities.
  • Manage the human resources department budget and external vendor relationships.
  • Translate workforce data, including exit interviews, engagement surveys, and employee relations trends, into actionable insights and communicate findings to leadership to inform decision-making.
  • Establish and standardize employee relations processes, including escalation pathways, documentation practices, and communication protocols.
  • Oversee professional development and training programs to grow managers and individual contributors across teams.
  • Design and deliver targeted training for managers and directors, particularly on indirect supervision, employee relations, and complex decision-making in a matrixed environment.
  • Establish a culture of continuous and impactful feedback.
  • Enhance performance management systems that promote accountability, feedback, and growth.
  • Lead initiatives with the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel that strengthen collaboration, cross-functional effectiveness, and capacity-building.
  • Oversee employee relations matters and investigations with the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, ensuring consistent, well-documented, and defensible practices in complex and sensitive situations.
  • Advise managers on conflict resolution, performance issues, and disciplinary actions.
  • Serve as a trusted mediator in complex and sensitive situations, including leadership-level conflicts, balancing employee advocacy with organizational risk.
  • Nurture organizational culture to drive employee engagement and performance and reinforce an environment where employees feel seen, valued, and heard.
  • Oversee engagement events and opportunities that meet the needs of employees in a high-intensity workplace.
  • Oversee regular all-staff surveys and feedback opportunities, share insights with leadership, and translate findings into actionable initiatives.
  • Develop a measurable plan to establish a baseline for employee engagement and improve it over time.
  • Oversee employee recognition and wellness activities.
  • Use engagement data, exit feedback, and employee insights to identify trends and address factors affecting retention, morale, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Oversee recruitment and development strategy to attract, grow, and retain mission-aligned talent in alignment with organizational needs.
  • Implement proactive workforce planning and succession planning frameworks.
  • Oversee recruitment process improvements for consistency, efficiency, partnership with hiring managers, and candidate experience.
  • Partner with hiring managers to strengthen hiring decision-making, role expectations, candidate evaluation, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Use hiring, onboarding, and retention data to refine talent strategies and improve employee outcomes.
  • Implement and improve the organization's compensation philosophy and framework with the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel.
  • Create and improve job leveling, titling, and career pathing programs with the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel.
  • Advise senior leadership on people and culture matters through expert insight, recommendations, workforce planning, organizational design, and talent strategy.
  • Build trust in the human resources function as an approachable, solutions-oriented partner to employees and leadership.
  • Address human-resources-related legal and regulatory matters while balancing the organization's mission and vision.
  • Navigate complex organizational dynamics with discretion and influence, build alignment across leadership, and support effective decision-making.

  • Background working in human resources at a law firm, legal services organization, and/or a nonprofit is strongly preferred.
