Pepsi CEO warns convenience stores face sales slump as gas prices hit $3.94

PepsiCo reported weakening sales in US convenience stores as high petrol prices prompt consumers to cut discretionary spending. Chief executive Ramon Laguarta said impulse purchase channels showed a slowdown, with fewer customers converting store visits into purchases. When petrol prices exceed $3.50 per gallon, consumers historically reduce spending on non-essential items. The national average reached $3.94 in mid-July, up 10 cents from the previous week. For convenience stores, fuel accounts for 65% of sales but only 38.8% of gross profit. Food service generates 28.5% of in-store sales and 38.9% of gross profit. PepsiCo is working with retail partners on bundles and promotional offers to increase conversion rates, though the effectiveness depends on volatile petrol prices.

7-Eleven launches kids' meals from $5.07 as food transformation ramps up

7-Eleven has launched kids' meals across all its proprietary restaurant brands, including Laredo Taco Company, Raise the Roost Chicken & Biscuits and Speedy Café locations. The meals, starting at $3.99, include an entrée, side, drink and a small item such as Hot Wheels stickers or monster truck toys. At Laredo Taco, children receive a bean and cheese taco or quesadilla with rice or beans, tortilla chips and a beverage. Raise the Roost offers chicken tenders with potato wedges, whilst Speedy Café provides sandwich or nugget options with tater tots. The move forms part of 7-Eleven's broader transformation strategy to position itself as a dining destination. The retailer plans to renovate around 7,000 locations by 2030 and recently added its first national catering programme.

7-Eleven launches catering service with made-to-order pizzas and tacos as 645 stores set to close

7-Eleven has launched a catering service in partnership with ezCater, expanding beyond its convenience store model to serve group meals for corporate events and planned gatherings. The service features menu items from its restaurant-style sub-brands Laredo Taco Company and Speedy Cafe, offering tacos, breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and 14-inch pizzas. The company emphasises that all food is made-to-order daily in on-site kitchens. The move aims to provide budget-friendly catering options whilst leveraging existing kitchen infrastructure for higher-margin orders. The expansion comes as 7-Eleven plans to close approximately 645 stores over the next year, suggesting the chain is refocusing its business strategy towards more profitable revenue streams.

99-year-old 7-Eleven closing 645 stores as chain shifts to food-focused format

7-Eleven plans to close 645 convenience stores in 2026 as part of an ongoing portfolio optimisation strategy. The closures follow more than 600 location shutdowns in 2024 and 2025 combined, representing part of a broader business transformation. The 99-year-old chain is shifting from a traditional convenience store model to a food-focused format with higher-quality prepared foods and beverages. Some locations will be converted to wholesale fuel stores, which aren't included in the company's store count. The closures target underperforming locations affected by inflation, weaker traffic and shifting consumer behaviour. 7-Eleven operates over 13,000 stores across North America and is eyeing a 2027 IPO whilst simultaneously opening new large-format, food-focused locations.
