Requirements
  • Must have at least one year of experience in either (1) non-prime consumer lending or (2) LATAM-based consumer lending.
  • SQL proficiency is advanced and the candidate should be analytical self-sufficient; analysis should not need to be double-checked for technical correctness.
  • Autonomy: after becoming familiar with the product and customer base, you have strong opinions about what should be improved and you autonomously act to achieve those improvements.
  • Openness to criticism: you should be comfortable with leaders and other stakeholders challenging your positions as part of risk work.
  • Persuasion: you will need to persuade team members to accept or implement necessary but potentially disliked actions for the company’s health.
  • Paranoia: you are legitimately concerned about losses or profits moving in the wrong direction and you dig deeper to understand explanations.
  • Communication and executive presence: you will present yourself with poise in front of leaders and other stakeholders; your communication should not be confusing.
  • There is no general years of experience requirement, but the company expects around 6-12 total years of experience for this senior individual contributor role.
  • Location: New York City or Mexico City; 80% in office; Language: English required; Spanish nice to have.
  • Must be able to operate as a senior individual contributor and scale impact through code and agents; leadership opportunities may be unlocked for high performers when there are clear outcomes to achieve.
Responsibilities
  • Model a course to a portfolio that can sustain a 100% increase in losses without causing gross margin to dip below a specified range within one month of start date.
  • By the end of the third month post start date, ensure there are no stable segments with a >=15% relative difference between expected vs actual credit loss performance at time of acquisition by addressing any that appear with short-term rule adjustments.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve approve/decline, line assignment, pricing, or loan duration policy and launch an experiment to test hypotheses within three months of start date; expect at least one experiment generating a 1 percentage point increase in gross profit in the treatment group within four months of starting at Nelo.
  • Within a year generate a cumulative $1 million of gross profit that would not have existed had you not run the experiments and made credit policy changes; within two years, target $5 million cumulative.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ambitious; highly driven to succeed, competitive, and perpetually unsatisfied.
  • High standards; this is your craft and you sweat the details.
  • Work ethic; the role requires a lot of hard work in a fast-moving, evolving environment.
  • Proactivity; ownership and agency are rewarded with more responsibility and compensation.
  • Efficiency; ability to move fast and learn fast.
  • Honesty and integrity; dealing with people’s financial lives requires trust.

Nelo Mobile provides a buy now, pay later (BNPL) service for online shoppers in Mexico. It partners with e-commerce platforms and retailers to integrate its payment option at checkout, allowing customers to buy goods and pay in installments over time. Merchants pay Nelo a transaction fee to offer the service, and Nelo may charge interest or fees to consumers who choose longer repayment terms. The product uses credit assessment technology to evaluate a buyer’s eligibility and repayment risk, enabling flexible financing while aiming for responsible lending. Nelo differentiates itself by focusing on the Mexican online shopping market through merchant partnerships and a credit-scored, installment-based payment method that can help merchants increase conversions. The company’s goal is to expand access to flexible, digital lending in LATAM by enabling merchants to offer BNPL and giving consumers more payment options at checkout.
