The company now operates 56 locations across 13 states, with 14 new sites planned. Founded by Arch "Beaver" Aplin in 1982, Buc-ee's has transformed the traditional rest stop into a sprawling destination. Its stores feature around 100 petrol pumps, walls of jerky, barbecue counters, and branded merchandise including its famous Beaver Nuggets. Each location generates an estimated $50 million to $100 million in annual revenue. Petrol serves as a loss-leader, with two-thirds of revenue coming from in-store purchases. The expansion has inspired competitors and sparked local resistance in Ohio, Virginia, and Colorado. Buc-ee's has also pursued legal action against rivals over alleged trademark infringement.

Tennessee's next Buc-ee's is rapidly taking shape in Murfreesboro, and the company has confirmed that it expects to open before the end of 2026. The project is the next step in Buc-ee's effort to expand from East Tennessee into the middle and western parts of the state. The travel center is being built beside Interstate 24 at the Joe B. A large hiring event is scheduled from September 29 through October 1 at The View at the Fountains. The company is expected to create roughly 250 full-time jobs at the location. Before construction could move forward, significant road improvements were needed around the interchange. Those projects included changes to local streets, the interchange and a roundabout. According to Murfreesboro's mayor, Buc-ee's paid for the improvements without city, county or state funding. Tennessee has another Buc-ee's coming after Murfreesboro. Tennessee currently has two open stores: Crossville along I-40 and the Sevierville-area location in Kodak near the Great Smoky Mountains. Murfreesboro will become the third. A fourth Tennessee store is under development in Gallaway, about 40 minutes from Memphis. That project has been delayed from its original 2026 target and is now expected sometime in 2027. On August 12, Buc-ee's will open a new location in San Marcos, Texas, roughly halfway between Austin and San Antonio. The site cost roughly $47.2 million, according to local reporting. Buc-ee's says it expects the location to create more than 200 jobs. The San Marcos store will mark the third new Buc-ee's location to open this year. Ohio's first-ever Buc-ee's opened in April, and in June, the company's westernmost location opened in Arizona. Meanwhile, Buc-ee's is working to bring travel centers, brisket, and Beaver Nuggets to more than a dozen other states, including another location expected to open in August.
