Requirements
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, no prior experience is needed; on-the-job training is provided.
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, a COA or COT certification through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology must be obtained within 12 months of the start date.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, a high school diploma or equivalent GED, at least one year of ophthalmic experience, and completion of a certified assistant program or equivalent are required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, current COA certification through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology must be maintained throughout employment.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, a high school diploma or equivalent GED, at least two years of specialized ophthalmic experience, and completion of a certified technician program are required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, current COT certification through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology must be maintained throughout employment.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
- Candidates must be physically able to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, qualify for respirator use, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for visits and collect medical histories.
- Perform basic vision screenings and general patient-care activities.
- Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, and basic slit-lamp examinations.
- Administer dilation drops and assist with minor in-office procedures.
- Document clinical findings in patient medical records.
- Prepare examination rooms, maintain equipment and instruments, and follow infection-control and sterilization protocols.
- Provide patient support and help manage clinical communication.
- Conduct complex diagnostic testing and operate advanced ophthalmic instruments.
- Assist with intravitreal injections and post-operative care as needed.
- Lead clinical workflow, mentor entry-level staff, and ensure patient-care and clinic-readiness standards.
- Serve as a liaison between ophthalmologists and patients to support clinic efficiency and patient experience.
