Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience in design, development, and/or testing for spacecraft fluid or propulsion systems, mechanisms, and/or components.
  • Proven leadership experience in a responsible engineer, project lead, or team management capacity.
  • Experience taking a product from concept to operation.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks, including blank-page engineering and engineering from first principles.
  • Experience with fluid and instrumentation diagrams, pressurized systems, sealing devices, pumps, valves, and regulators.
  • General understanding of thermal engineering design principles.
  • Experience performing hand calculations and analysis to support system design and development.
  • Understanding of qualification, acceptance, and proto-qualification verification approaches.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling, computer-aided design, and related tools.
  • Knowledge of space-rated materials and design trade-offs involving material choices.
  • Ability to work autonomously and critically evaluate work.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced small-company environment.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness and ability to work a hybrid schedule with 3–5 days per week on site in Lafayette, Colorado.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the propulsion team through multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
  • Delegate work so that team members handle tasks suited to their skills, interests, and technical growth paths.
  • Guide process development and adherence for the propulsion engineering team.
  • Review thermal-fluid system architecture affecting the overall mission and products interfacing with the hardware.
  • Support analyses required to satisfy internal requirements for hardware performance, life, and environment.
  • Support assembly and test activities.
  • Review engineering drawings, ensure best practices are applied to released drawings, and prepare and deliver team-work reviews before critical milestones.
  • Identify roadblocks to technical progress and mitigate or avoid them.
  • Deliver presentations to the team.
  • Hold weekly one-on-one meetings with team members and provide mentorship.
  • Design chemical propellant storage, feed, and transfer systems.
  • Develop and procure propellant tanks and fluid-system components for storable propellants.
  • Perform flow-rate and pressure analyses on fluid systems.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department.
  • Own the design and analysis of spacecraft systems, fluidic components, and ground-support equipment.
  • Develop and maintain detailed computer-aided design models and piping and instrumentation diagram documentation.
  • Perform analyses and testing to validate designs and ensure compliance.
  • Provide subject-matter-expert input to engineering products, spacecraft architecture, trade studies, requirements development, and verification and validation plans.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 10 years of experience in design, development, and/or testing for spacecraft fluid or propulsion systems, mechanisms, and/or components.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing teams.
  • Experience with storable chemical propellant systems or components.
  • Experience performing analysis with GFSSP, Ansys, and MATLAB.
  • Strong foundation in thermal engineering.
  • Experience with spacecraft or launch-vehicle operations.
  • An advanced degree in an engineering discipline or related field.
  • Working knowledge of range-safety requirements, including AFSPCMAN 91-710.
  • Experience with spacecraft and subsystem environment definition, including radiation, structural loads, thermal conditions, electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility, and orbital debris, and related design approaches for low Earth orbit, geostationary Earth orbit, and beyond.
  • Experience in a startup environment.

OrbitFab provides in-space refueling for satellites by deploying propellant depots and using reusable fuel shuttles to create an orbital gas-station network. In practice, propellant such as hydrazine is stored in orbit and delivered to customers’ satellites on demand, with revenue from selling propellant and contracts with operators including the U.S. Space Force starting in 2025. It differentiates itself by building an end-to-end orbital supply chain for propellant and logistics, rather than only servicing satellites, enabling a scalable, recurring fuel infrastructure. Its goal is to establish a practical, ongoing in-space propellant supply system that increases satellite utility and supports broader space industries like manufacturing and tourism.

Orbit Fab raises $25M, appoints new CEO to commercialise satellite refueling

Orbit Fab has appointed Peter Shaper as chief executive and raised over $25 million in interim funding from Stride Capital. The Colorado-based satellite refueling company is transitioning from technology development to commercial operations. Shaper, who has three decades of private equity experience, previously led satellite services companies CapRock Communications and Speedcast. He aims to commercialise Orbit Fab's RAFTI docking and refueling interface technology. The company has three demonstration missions scheduled for the next 18 to 24 months, designed to refuel government satellites using hydrazine fuel shuttles. These demonstrations could unlock over $40 million in contracts for on-orbit refueling services. Orbit Fab is preparing to raise between $30 million and $50 million in a Series B round later this year. The funding will support at least two demo missions in 2027 and initial commercial contracts, targeting primarily US military customers.
