The University of Chicago Crime Lab and Education Lab partner with cities and communities to use data and rigorous research to design, test, and scale programs and policies that enhance public safety, improve educational outcomes, and advance justice. Job Information
Job Summary:
The Data Analytics summer internship is a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of policy research and to develop research skills. Data Analytics Interns will work directly with project teams while learning how to apply skills and techniques learned through their academic coursework to ongoing social science research. This position will be full-time for approximately 37.5 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Data cleaning, data processing, and statistical analysis.
- Writing, formatting, and editing reports and works for dissemination.
- Data entry and literature reviews.
- Administrative tasks.
Competencies:
- Interest in and aptitude for developing advanced programming and analytic skills for working with administrative data.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to synthesize multiple sources.
- Strong initiative and a resourceful approach to problem-solving and learning.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Sound critical thinking skills.
- Strong attention to detail with superb organization skills.
- Knowledge of the substantive policy area.
Additional Responsibilities
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Significant progress toward a degree in a social science discipline (e.g., economics, public policy, statistics, or data analytics), along with a strong background in mathematics and statistics preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required.
- Experience with at least one statistical package (e.g., R, Stata, or Python) is required, with a preference for R.
