Requirements
  • M.S. or higher degree in an engineering field, preferably with exposure to spacecraft dynamics and orbital mechanics
  • Deep knowledge of estimation and control theory
  • Expertise in common numerical programming environments (Python - preferred, Matlab, Julia)
  • Extensive experience running dynamics simulations for spacecraft
  • Experience designing and executing GNC component or system-level tests
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and coordination skills
  • Dedication to finding resolutions based on the most important factors and data
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with new opportunities each week
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage the team responsible for the GNC design for multiple complete spacecraft mission lifecycles
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the GNC subsystem both internally and with external partners
  • Design foundational GNC architectures and roadmaps for multi-mission buses that are also adaptable to mission-specific needs
  • Define requirements and acceptance approaches for GNC components working beside Systems Engineers and other subsystem engineers. Create pointing, agility, and positioning budgets to meet mission targeting, geolocation and stability requirements
  • Size, assess, and select GNC sensors, actuators and propulsion systems, performing make-vs-buy trades as needed.
  • Execute 6-DOF simulations to evaluate expected on-orbit performance
  • Develop environmental models as well as control, attitude and position determination, and schedule algorithms
  • Develop calibration approaches and associated ground support equipment
  • Drive software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing for GNC algorithms and hardware verification
  • Proactively identify and manage risks within the subsystem and to the spacecraft, creating mitigation strategies

Muon Space designs, deploys, and operates satellite constellations to provide Earth Intelligence that helps protect people, the climate, and ecosystems. Their services include creating mission strategies, building satellite constellations, and managing these systems using their own AI automation technology. This approach allows them to deliver high performance and reliability while keeping costs low and speeding up satellite launches. Unlike many competitors, Muon Space focuses on understanding and solving their clients' specific needs rather than just selling satellite products. They operate on a pay-as-you-go model, which includes the development and operation of satellite systems and the data generated from them. The team at Muon Space has extensive experience from organizations like NASA, Google, and SpaceX, which enhances their capability to provide valuable insights to clients in areas such as climate change, security, and resource management.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Muon Space's partnership with Earth Fire Alliance to launch the FireSat Constellation demonstrates their commitment to addressing critical global issues like wildfire management.
  • The successful Series A funding round and over $60M in new contracts validate the market's confidence in Muon Space's innovative solutions.
  • Their selection by the National Reconnaissance Office and AFWERX for contracts highlights their growing influence and potential for significant government and defense sector engagements.

What critics are saying

  • The ambitious timelines for deploying satellite constellations, such as the FireSat Constellation by 2026, could face delays and technical challenges.
  • The competitive landscape in space technology is intense, with established players potentially overshadowing Muon Space's market presence.

What makes Muon Space unique

  • Muon Space's end-to-end space systems solutions, including mission strategy, satellite constellation design, and AI automation, set it apart from competitors who may only offer piecemeal services.
  • Their proprietary technology stack, Muon Halo, provides high performance, scalability, and reliability, reducing costs and accelerating deployment times, which is a significant advantage over traditional satellite solutions.
  • The extensive expertise of their team, with backgrounds from NASA, Google, and SpaceX, adds a layer of credibility and innovation that is hard to match in the space technology industry.
