- Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles for roadway maintenance, construction-related work, and emergency operations.
- Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other emergency operations; clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris; clean up after accidents; and provide traffic control.
- Determine and demonstrate proper work-site protection techniques, identify workplace safety hazards, and suggest improvements.
- Wear proper personal protective equipment, follow current safety rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Virginia Occupational Safety and Health requirements, and follow Virginia Department of Transportation safety regulations and practices.
- Participate as a working crew member to complete projects and objectives, performing manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks.
- Perform maintenance, repair, replacement, and preventive-maintenance work, including completing pre-trip inspections for operated vehicles and equipment.
- Install, maintain, and remove traffic-control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Assist with tracking inventory and maintaining records.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or a related field.
- Experience with emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident cleanup.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
