Requirements
  • Completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as motor equipment operation, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • A current and valid driver's license.
  • A Commercial Driver's License, Class A, issued by Virginia or North Carolina.
  • Ability to work during all inclement weather, including flooding, hurricanes, and snow.
  • Ability to work hours beyond the normal schedule in response to short-term department needs or city-wide emergencies.
  • Ability to wear and maintain required personal protective equipment, including steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment.
  • Ability to meet mandatory drug testing and annual examination requirements if designated as a safety-sensitive position.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including substantial manual work.
Responsibilities
  • Operate a dump truck to transport sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
  • Operate a concrete truck.
  • Operate a light truck to carry tools, equipment, and supplies to and from job sites.
  • Operate a motor truck for snow removal or sanding icy streets and roads.
  • Operate a dump truck, backhoe, and/or excavator.
  • Repair, replace, and maintain catch basins, manholes, concrete, metal and plastic pipe, asphalt and concrete pavement, and concrete curbs and gutters using proper methods and techniques.
  • Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment, including excavators, front-end loaders, and backhoes.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment transported by truck.
  • Clean drainage structures and perform concrete repairs, construct forms, work with pipes and ditches, remove debris and downed trees, and shovel sediment by hand.
  • Work during all inclement weather as required by the Alpha 1 designation.
  • Complete other duties requiring the skills, knowledge, and physical abilities associated with the position, as assigned according to workload and department needs.
