The American Red Cross provides emergency relief and humanitarian aid by mobilizing volunteers, donors, and staff to respond to disasters and everyday needs. Its main activities include collecting and supplying blood, running disaster response operations, offering life-saving training (such as CPR and first aid), supporting military families, and promoting preparedness in communities. The organization works by coordinating volunteers, managing blood banks and donation drives, deploying resources during emergencies, and teaching people essential emergency skills. What sets it apart from many other aid groups is its nationwide network and established infrastructure that combines disaster response, blood services, and preparedness programs under one umbrella, backed by a steady flow of donations and volunteers. The goal is to prevent and relieve human suffering by being ready to help at any time, at home and around the world.

Frye Regional Medical Center to host community blood drive on August 27.

Frye Regional Medical Center to host community blood drive on August 27. Frye Regional Medical Center, a Duke LifePoint hospital, announced on Aug. 20 that it will host a community blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Frye Regional Heart Tower Lobby and aims to support efforts to maintain a stable blood supply. Hospital officials said donated blood is essential for patient care, including surgery, cancer treatment, recovery from serious injuries, and management of other medical conditions. Because blood cannot be manufactured, hospitals depend on volunteer donors to ensure an adequate supply. "Every blood donation represents an opportunity to make a meaningful difference for someone who needs lifesaving care," said Michael Register, director of clinical laboratory services at Frye Regional Medical Center. "Blood donations are essential to maintaining a stable blood supply and supporting patients who depend on these lifesaving resources. We encourage eligible donors throughout our community to make an appointment or stop by to help ensure blood is available when patients need it most." To schedule an appointment for the upcoming drive, individuals can visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 800-733-2767, or use the Red Cross blood donor app. All participating donors will receive a $20 Amazon.com e-gift card. Frye Regional Medical Center advances community well-being by delivering advanced specialty care locally in the Catawba Valley region and includes its main campus in Hickory along with a South Campus behavioral health hospital and multiple outpatient centers; it also operates as part of Duke LifePoint Healthcare and has been recognized as high performing in heart attack and heart failure care by U.S. News & World Report, according to the official website.
