Position Title: Public Health Epidemiologist

Salary: $83,999.00

The Public Health Epidemiologist at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services work will have significant impact on public health as they plan, develop and conduct investigations into the causes of negative health outcomes including disease and injury. Employees implement interventions to control and prevent negative health outcomes. This position serves as the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) epidemiologist for the Surveillance for Healthcare Associated and Resistant Pathogens Patient Safety Program (SHARPPS).

· Working knowledge of epidemiologic principles, investigations, surveillance, study design, descriptive statistics, statistical analysis and interpretation of statistical data and scientific literature.

· Considerable knowledge of biostatistics including the use of statistical software and statistical programming languages.

· Considerable knowledge of computers, database design, management and manipulation.

· Considerable knowledge of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)

· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

· Master’s degree in Epidemiology or closely related health field from an appropriately accredited institution.

· Two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Employees’ work may have a significant impact on public health as they plan, develop and conduct investigations into the causes of negative health outcomes including disease and injury.

· Employee will implement interventions to control and prevent negative health outcomes.

· Employee will collect, analyze and interpret statistical data and prepare epidemiologic reports.

· Employee will provide epidemiological data for consultation and assist in the development and coordination of plans to reduce the risk of negative health outcomes including death.

· Work includes assisting county health departments in formulating strategies to manage problems, conducting varied literature reviews and implementing evidence-based interventions.

· Employees may specialize in a number of areas including infectious disease, chronic disease, injury, environmental/occupational epidemiology, health care evaluation, cancer, reproductive health, cardiovascular disease, or human genetics.

· Employees may develop policies and procedures for new and existing disease control or other public health prevention programs on a limited basis or scope.

· Work in this class involves training, technical assistance and consultation regarding epidemiology and control of diseases or other health outcomes.

· Employee will serve as a technical expert in the assigned area.

· Work may include trend analysis and independent statistical and epidemiological analysis.

Roles and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon or updated to match priorities and needs, once written approval is received by both the CDC Foundation and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in order to best support the State of North Carolina in their public health programming.
