Requirements
  • Professional interpreting experience is required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an accredited medical interpreter training course of at least 40 hours is required.
  • Three months or 480 hours of documented medical interpreting experience is required.
  • Proficiency in English, Hebrew, and one other language is preferred.
  • A Certified Healthcare Interpreter certification issued by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters or a Certified Medical Interpreter certification issued by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters is required within 12 months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provide on-site and over-the-phone interpretation of critical medical information in Spanish and English for providers, patients, and caregivers during inpatient and outpatient visits.
  • Ensure providers and limited-English-proficient or non-English-proficient patients and parents clearly understand each other during verbal exchanges of essential information, including informed consent, medical interviews, and healthcare instructions.
  • Interpret telephone conferences between caregivers and providers.
  • Notify the supervisor of potential or actual communication problems involving limited-English-proficient or non-English-proficient patients and staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to limited-English-proficient or non-English-proficient patients and families.
  • Link limited-English-proficient patients and families with appropriate hospital resources.
  • Perform written translation of non-critical documents on a limited basis.
  • Provide timely and accurate daily records of all interpreting services performed.
  • Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance professional medical interpretation skills.
  • Collaborate with other interpreters to ensure coverage of interpreting assignments and participate in the assigned on-call rotation.
  • Assist with the coordination of volunteer medical interpreters.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of other medical interpreters as needed.
  • Perform other related duties assigned to meet department and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Medical proficiency and experience interpreting in Hebrew could be a plus.
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.
