Velera arms Credit Unions against consumer-engaged fraud.

Velera arms Credit Unions against consumer-engaged fraud. Credit union service organization (CUSO) Velera has released a new resource designed to help credit unions navigate complex consumer-engaged fraud cases, the company said in a Thursday (Aug. 20) press release emailed to PYMNTS. Velera's "Consumer-Engaged Fraud Case Management Playbook" provides a framework for investigating claims, making informed filing decisions and reducing chargeback risk. It includes case management guidance, filing best practices, real-world examples, and tools and resources such as a case management checklist, according to the release. Consumer-engaged fraud is a growing source of losses for financial institutions and merchants. Because this form of fraud can involve legitimate cardholders who are either manipulated into fraudulent activity or intentionally misuse their accounts, it requires a more nuanced approach to investigating claims, the release said. Velera's new playbook builds on the "Consumer-Engaged Fraud Classification Guide" the company released in April, which helps credit unions identify and categorize key types of consumer-engaged fraud, including misuse, persuaded and collusive merchant fraud, per the release. Velera Managing Vice President of Risk Operations Nicole Reyes said in the release that credit unions can't rely on the signals and assumptions they use to evaluate traditional fraud when evaluating consumer-engaged fraud. "An authorized transaction doesn't necessarily mean the member acted knowingly, and a disputed transaction doesn't necessarily mean the member was a victim," Reyes said. "This is where context becomes critical. Credit unions need to understand what happened around the transaction, not just what happened during it, so they can protect members, manage losses and make decisions they can stand behind." Velera sounded the alarm on consumer-engaged fraud in March when it announced its "Consumer-Engaged Fraud Classification Guide." Velera said there are two types of consumer-engaged fraud: misuse and persuaded. Misuse happens when a "transaction or engagement is made or initiated without outside influence by someone who does not have authorization to use an account and is subsequently reported as fraud." Persuaded fraud happens when that transaction or engagement happens with outside influence "due to an authorized user of an account engaging with a third party that influences the completion of a transaction, which is then reported as fraud." The PYMNTS Intelligence and Velera collaboration "Defending the Member: How Credit Unions Are Responding to a New Fraud Landscape" found that consumer-engaged fraud is part of a rapidly changing fraud landscape. The report also found that as fraud risks grow, members expect their credit unions to detect, communicate and prevent threats in real time while preserving a seamless experience.

Velera launches Risk Alert Manager to strengthen fraud detection and response time.

Velera launches Risk Alert Manager to strengthen fraud detection and response time. * 4 hours ago Tampa, Fla. (July 28, 2026) - Velera, the nation's premier payments credit union service organization (CUSO) and an integrated financial technology solutions provider, today announced its new Risk Alert Manager, a fully integrated risk mitigation solution that allows Velera credit unions to monitor and respond to potential fraud events in near real time. As fraud volume and sophistication continue to increase, financial institutions face mounting pressure to respond before incidents escalate. Yet many existing solutions rely on third parties and ticketing systems, creating delays that prevent teams from acting decisively. With one in ten consumers experiencing card fraud in the past year according to Velera's 2025 Eye on Payments report, financial institutions need tools that put control back in their hands, enabling proactive responses to protect cardholders and operations. Risk Alert Manager was built to meet this need by putting credit unions fully in control of their fraud response. Unlike third-party systems that require multi-step handoffs, Risk Alert Manager unifies data from all cardholder interactions and is powered by Atmos Risk, Velera's unified AI-powered risk platform that enables fraud detection and protection, while enhancing member experience. Risk Alert Manager helps streamline fraud monitoring, reduces lag time and enables immediate actions on at risk accounts - all within one environment that keeps both financial institutions and cardholders informed. Key features include: * Near real-time detection: Allows financial institutions to manage and act on compromised events in near real time using data and intelligence to mitigate risk. * Immediate response: Enables instant action like blocking, unblocking, monitoring, card re-issuance and account memos to mitigate losses. * Multi-channel data integration: Consolidates data from all cardholder interactions to a single, integrated application, ensuring no fraudulent activity goes unnoticed across different channels. * Comprehensive data intelligence: Provides audit history reviews, dashboard analytics and reporting tools to support compliance tracking and decision-making. * Revenue opportunities: Offers premium alert services to help financial institutions strengthen their competitive positioning in the market. "Fraud is evolving faster than ever, and even a single delay can have costly consequences for both credit unions and their members," said Velera Senior Vice President of Risk Solutions Karen Postma. "Velera's Risk Alert Manager empowers financial institutions to act instantly at the first sign of suspicious activity - protecting consumers, mitigating losses and staying one step ahead of emerging threats." Following a successful pilot with select credit unions, Velera will introduce additional features and availability through a phased rollout this year. The current iteration is compatible with both Mastercard and Visa cards, and is designed to scale with financial institutions' evolving risk mitigation needs. About Velera Velera is the nation's premier payments credit union service organization (CUSO) and an integrated financial technology solutions provider. With over four decades of industry experience and a commitment to service excellence and innovation, the company serves more than 4,000 financial institutions throughout North America, operating with velocity to help its clients keep pace with the rapid momentum of change and fuel growth in the new era of financial services.
