APEM Group to be acquired by global testing, inspection and certification business

APEM Group to be acquired by global testing, inspection and certification business. APEM Group has grown from a 1980s Manchester University campus company specialising in environmental consultancy, to producing £95m ($127m) in revenue in the year to June and employing 850 staff around the world. In September, Applus+, a testing, inspection and certification company with over 28,000 staff, announced it will be acquiring APEM Group for around £335m ($447m). The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals but expected to close by the end of the year. WestBridge, a private equity firm that backed a management buyout of APEM Group in 2019, has now agreed to sell the company. APEM Group has always been fortunate to attract a lot of interest over the years and none more so than this, says Leah McGimpsey, the company's CEO. She says the company's deep technical and scientific expertise, built over 35 years, was the primary factor. APEM Group typically supports its clients - from water companies to renewable energy and infrastructure developers, on land and offshore - in the earlier stages of their projects. Impact assessments, feasibility studies and strategic planning are its bread and butter. In 2024, over 90% of its £79m ($105m) in global revenue came from impact assessments, according to Environment Analyst data. By contrast, Applus+ is primarily involved in the later stages of operations and maintenance of assets, through testing, inspection and certification. McGimpsey says the acquisition is therefore highly complementary and brings together "two deeply scientific businesses who value quality partnership with our clients". Environmental science meets award-winning tech. The increasing role of data, science and technology in consulting has helped set the right conditions for this acquisition, McGimpsey says. She adds: "Our clients are highly sophisticated. They demand that their consultants bring real data and tech-led capability. This supports businesses coming together to be able to be a better partner to their clients." Applus+ is renowned for its use of technology and digital transformation. APEM Group's scientific specialists will consequently have access to a new set of advanced tools. Developing new technology and using data in more sophisticated ways takes investment ahead of time. A sense for what technologies the future will demand, and making sure team members get the right training and development to work with it, are also essential. McGimpsey says this "supports businesses coming together to pool resources to be able to invest more, and provide more to our clients." Five, ten or 15 years down the line, she says there will be increasing use of sensing technology, automation and digitisation. The ability to look at larger sets of data across a client's full operations, in more locations, and make predictions years into the future, will help consultants find more opportunities to deliver better environmental outcomes for their clients. For example, this can be a case of collecting more data points to help tackle existing challenges, like determining the environmental impacts of a project. Doing so can deliver the outcome in "a more informed, sophisticated and beneficial way to the client", McGimpsey says. But she adds that consultants could use this access to better data to develop new solutions that improve how clients manage their impact, using the live information flow from the entire project. As McGimpsey puts it: "The more innovative and blue-sky side of that is: what net new solutions can you bring to the client that they're not currently getting?" For instance, she says that if a consultant starts collecting higher volumes of data across more stages of client projects, they can see greater connectivity between previously segregated information. This could lead to entirely new insights or digital solutions, from a fuller lifecycle view of the client's impacts, to how to manage them. Predictive capabilities will keep getting better, as AI and digital tools get more sophisticated. Giving clients advice based on live, iterative, predictive insights, determined by continuously gathering data points, will keep them better informed and able to manage their impacts. This kind of smarter technology will allow scientists and consultants to provide better advice. And it may even create opportunities to deliver more work to clients, rather than taking it off their hands. New markets. McGimpsey is especially excited about Applus+'s global presence, which will provide APEM Group's team with greater access to international work. Founded in Spain, Applus+ has a strong reputation and strength of presence in continental Europe, McGimpsey says. This dovetails well with APEM Group's current European footprint expanding from its core markets of the UK and Ireland - Environment Analyst data indicates a majority of the company's revenue tends to come from the UK. Applus+'s reach outside Europe will help APEM Group work more seamlessly with clients in other continents. For instance, McGimpsey says their teams are regularly asked to do work for clients in regions like South America. And there is often an initial hurdle to clear in the form of setting up legal and administrative processes. APEM Group is already expanding into Australia. Its most recent acquisition in the country brought its headcount there to 275. McGimpsey says the two companies' operations there are largely complementary, with minimal overlap, as they serve different end markets. Access to a global network provides improved opportunities for employees to develop and work in new locations. McGimpsey says this is another plus for APEM Group.
