The Managing Principal Engineer (MPE) functions under the direction and the Department Engineering Manager. The MPE over the Crane team will be responsible for directing and monitoring project work related to cranes (Ship and Offshore), underwater vehicles (ROVs/AUVs), and containers. Will lead and assign work according to priority. Act as a technical resource and a mentor to principal, senior and entry to mid-level engineers. Is responsible for day-to-day activities, including the maintenance of the quality, content, consistency and continuity of all technical work performed within the team.
What You Will Do:
- Assists in the development of short- and long-range business plans and related annual
operating and capital expense budgets.
- Prepares annual performance appraisals.
- Evaluates and communicates individual performance appraisal issues with staff members under his/her direct supervision and recommends compensation adjustments and advancements to senior management.
- Reviews Designer’s/Manufacturer’s qualification package for Compliance with requirements
including but not limited to risk assessment, engineering calculations, FEA, and validation
testing.
- Attends technical meetings with OEM’s and Designer’s, ensure projects progress smoothly,
issues are resolved in a timely manner, and final approvals are delivered on schedule.
- Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned. Assigns projects to Engineers
and monitors the progress of all assigned projects.
- Ensures the delivery of high-quality service and maintenance of good customer relations. May perform detailed engineering review of plans for compliance with applicable Rules, Standards, Regulations, and contract requirements.
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered and recommends changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
- Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.
- Advises assigned staff in matters related to applying Rules and Regulations.
- Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.
- Monitors assigned engineers' performance, development potential, and training needs. Keeps management informed of manpower needs.
- Implements and maintains the Company’s Quality System within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Prepares accurate billing for clients.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent in mechanical, ocean, structural, or civil
engineering.
- Should have at least eight (8) years of experience in an appropriate technical discipline and/or
industry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- The management skills to organize, plan and direct the work activities of other professional
employees.
- The human relations skills necessary to organize, direct and motivate entry, mid-, and senior
level professionals. These skills are also necessary to develop strong client relationships at
the highest levels.
- Knowledge of applicable API (2C), ASME (B30), ISO (19354, 19360), IEC (60945, 60529), and
IEEE (1580, 45) standards.
- Familiarity with FEA-FEM Based modeling.
- Knowledge of Marine and Offshore lifting appliances.
- Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
- Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and
interpretations.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
- Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective
scheduling of work assignments.
Reporting Relationships:
The incumbent generally reports to a Manager but may report to others depending on the specifics of the assignment. There are direct reports for this position.
