  • Management raised 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $2.7 billion-$3.0 billion on July 29.

What critics are saying

  • Rising fuel costs cut $75 profit per vehicle in Q2 2026, pressuring delivery economics.

  • August 12, 2026 refinancing shows scale lowers Carvana’s capital costs faster than peers.
  • Q2 2026 record throughput—197,325 units—proves national logistics and reconditioning now operate at scale.

AlphaStreet Newsdesk powered by AlphaStreet Intelligence Carvana Co. surged 9.0% on Wednesday, riding a broad rally across sector peers that sent all major names sharply higher. The online used-car retailer climbed to $70.83 on volume of 6.4M shares as the auto dealership space posted coordinated gains, with three key sector peers also advancing: CarMax up 3.3%, Lithia Motors up 4.8%, and AutoNation up 3.1%. The synchronized move suggests sector-wide buying momentum rather than company-specific news. Carvana's 9.0% jump outpaced all three peers, indicating heightened investor appetite for the stock amid the broader sector rotation. The rally pushed Carvana's market capitalization to $104.9B, cementing its position as a major player in the auto dealership landscape. While no earnings report or analyst upgrade triggered the move, the strength across CarMax, Lithia Motors, and AutoNation points to renewed optimism around used-car demand or dealership fundamentals broadly. Volume and market context provide additional signals for traders watching the tape. The 6.4M shares traded Wednesday represents meaningful activity as the stock extended its recent momentum. Carvana has been one of the more volatile names in its sector, and days like Wednesday demonstrate the outsized moves the stock can produce when buyer interest aligns with sector tailwinds. The company's $104.9B valuation reflects the market's continued belief in its digital-first dealership model, even as traditional peers like Lithia Motors and AutoNation posted solid gains of their own. No company-specific catalyst emerged to explain the move, leaving sector dynamics as the primary driver. With all four major names posting gains - and Carvana leading the pack - investors appear to be rotating capital into auto dealership stocks as a group. Whether this reflects improving consumer sentiment, favorable inventory conditions, or simply technical buying remains unclear, but the breadth of the rally suggests more than a single-stock story. What to Watch: Monitor whether this sector-wide strength continues or fades. Any company-specific guidance, earnings updates, or industry data on used-car pricing and inventory levels could either confirm or challenge the bullish sentiment driving Wednesday's coordinated rally. Carvana stock drops 7% on fears Mark Walter may sell $2B stake amid federal probe

Carvana shares dropped 7% on Tuesday amid investor concerns that billionaire Mark Walter, who holds a $2 billion stake representing roughly 4% of the company, might sell his holdings. Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners and head of TWG Global, faces a federal investigation into whether he or his companies concealed financial ties whilst borrowing billions from insurers he controls. TWG Global announced a deal to swap up to $6.5 billion of affiliated investments held by its Delaware Life Insurance unit for independent assets. This restructuring has heightened worries that TWG may need additional cash, potentially forcing Walter to liquidate part of his Carvana position, though no sale has been confirmed. The stock decline follows Carvana's strong second-quarter results reported in July, with revenue reaching $7.4 billion and net income of $513 million.

Carvana shares lag broader market as analysts maintain 'moderate buy' rating

Carvana shares have underperformed the broader market over the past year, gaining 5% compared to the S&P 500's 20.2% rally. The stock is down 14.1% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 has risen 13.2%. The online used car retailer, with a market cap of $79.8 billion, faces operational cost pressures, shrinking profit margins, and elevated financing rates that are dampening used-car demand. Rising reconditioning expenses and contracting adjusted EBITDA margins have weighed on performance. In its second quarter results reported on 29 July, Carvana's earnings per share of $0.42 matched Wall Street expectations, whilst revenue of $7.4 billion exceeded forecasts of $7 billion. Of 23 analysts covering the stock, 13 rate it "Strong Buy", three "Moderate Buy", and seven "Hold", giving a consensus rating of "Moderate Buy".
