Requirements
  • Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship program in locksmithing and one year of journey-level experience working as a locksmith, or five years of journey-level locksmith experience, or two years with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Technician performing locksmith-related work.
  • Relevant education may substitute for up to six months, or up to two and one-half years, of the required experience as applicable.
  • A valid driver license is required at application, and a valid Arizona driver license is required at appointment.
  • The ability to obtain a jail pass is required.
  • Successful completion of required background screening, including verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history, is required.
  • The position requires a post-offer physical examination and/or drug screen.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds, operate assigned vehicles and powered equipment, use required safety equipment, work with hazardous chemicals, climb ladders and stairs, and differentiate colors.
  • Ability to work in heat, humidity, dust, cold, and obnoxious odors, including in correctional or other high-security facilities.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain master key systems to provide secure and efficient access control across facilities.
  • Install, maintain, and repair locks and locking systems on doors, cabinets, safes, gates, and other public service infrastructure.
  • Respond to emergency lockouts and security incidents during or outside regular hours and provide secure resolutions.
  • Install and service electronic access control systems, including card readers, electric strikes, and keypad locks.
  • Rekey locks and change lock combinations in response to security concerns, personnel changes, or access adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electronic locking issues and complete repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of key issuance, lock systems, and access control logs.
  • Collaborate with security, maintenance, and administrative personnel to improve facility safety and access strategies.
  • Fabricate and duplicate keys using manual and automated equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on locks and access systems.
  • Interpret and apply blueprints, floor plans, and technical drawings for lock installations and upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with safety codes, Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, and regulations governing physical security systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with a wide range of locksmith and electronic access system duties, including installation, maintenance, and repair of locks and doors and production of keys for commercial-grade hardware.
  • Experience maintaining master key code systems, including records and documentation of issued keys.
  • Experience and training with high-security institutional lock systems, including Southern Folger, RR Brink, Midwest Detention, Airteq, and Corbin Russwin hardware.
  • Experience reading and understanding blueprints and hardware schedules.
  • Experience performing basic repairs on wood and hollow metal doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Experience and willingness to perform other building maintenance duties.
