Senior Manager

The Senior Manager, Platform Engineering leads the design and delivery of the shared systems, data architecture, and service orchestration that power our entire product portfolio. This role is responsible for shaping a first-class platform layer — one that enables commercial teams to build faster, scale more efficiently, and deliver modules that interoperate cleanly across domains. The platform will support how we ingest, model, and exchange data; expose and manage internal and external APIs; and create the composable backbone of everything we build. 
 
This person owns the platform roadmap in partnership with a dedicated product manager and manages a team of architects, engineers, and contractors to bring it to life. Together, they will create the foundational building blocks that support cross-product data flow, reusable service design, customer onboarding, and data interoperability. The platform team will own some user-facing components — especially where data enters and exits the system — but their mission is enablement at scale: making it possible for our products to evolve faster than the market. 
 
This is a pivotal role in our transition to a modular, agentic, API-driven future — one where our platform architecture is not just behind-the-scenes infrastructure, but a reason our customers choose us. As AI-powered capabilities become more central to our portfolio, this role will ensure we have the right foundation to support agents, automation, and autonomy across the product landscape. 

What You Will Do:

• Own the platform engineering roadmap, in partnership with a dedicated product manager, to support modular product development at scale.
• Lead and grow a team of engineers and architects, with accountability for team development, delivery execution, and cross-functional alignment.
• Define and maintain standards for API design, data modeling, service orchestration, and cross-module integration.
• Drive delivery of internal platform services and limited user-facing experiences, including onboarding flows and data exchange interfaces.
• Collaborate with product and engineering leads to align platform capabilities with portfolio needs and accelerate time-to-market.
• Oversee implementation of observability, scalability, and developer experience tooling across shared infrastructure.
• Evaluate and adopt enabling technologies that support a modular, agentic, and API-driven architecture.
• Ensure the platform is designed to support AI-native and agentic product features, including data interoperability and orchestration layers.
• Support early-stage architecture and code reviews while building a scalable model for team growth and delegation.
• Communicate platform vision to internal stakeholders and contribute to external conversations with technical buyers as needed.
• Ensure compliance with engineering best practices, including data security, architectural governance, and sustainable operations. Maintain Ethical AI Considerations and Perspective to ensure that AI implementations meet ethical guidelines, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and security. 

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

• Ten (10) years of demonstrated experience in software engineering, platform development, infrastructure, or data architecture roles.
• Three (3) or more years of experience in a platform leadership capacity, with accountability for technical direction, team oversight, and cross-functional delivery in a B2B SaaS or modular product environment. 
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field is required.
• Master’s degree in a technical or engineering discipline is preferred; a PhD is a plus. 
• No Professional license or certification are required.  
• Azure certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert) are preferred.
• Relevant certifications in platform architecture, data engineering, or infrastructure-as-code tooling are considered a plus. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proven experience leading platform engineering, infrastructure, or data architecture functions in a B2B SaaS or modular product environment.
• Strong understanding of service-oriented and event-driven architectures, API management, and system interoperability.
• Experience designing and evolving enterprise-scale data models, ingestion patterns, and cross-product data flows.
• Familiarity with technologies that support modular and agentic architectures, including microservices, pub/sub systems, and service orchestration layers.
• Demonstrated ability to architect and guide implementation of AI-ready platform capabilities, including support for low-latency services and data orchestration.
• Hands-on familiarity with cloud-native development in Azure, including core services for compute, storage, identity, and observability.
• Experience with toolchains that support platform scale and stability — including CI/CD systems, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring/alerting stacks, and access management platforms.
• Skilled in managing and mentoring multidisciplinary technical teams, including engineering, architecture, and DevOps contributors.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfort navigating ambiguity, balancing short- and long-term priorities, and contributing to a fast-evolving technical strategy.
• Working knowledge of business management systems, process and procedures.
• Strong capability to build and maintain professional relationships internally and externally to ABS.  
• A working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System (internal candidates only). 

Reporting Relationships:

• Typically reports to Director level management but may report to senior level management as required by business or geography.  If required by business or geography the position may report through senior level operational management.
