Requirements
  • Seven years of investment accounting experience, preferably in the insurance or financial services industries and within a specific product or business area.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and functional business-area regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of industry practices in complex financial statement preparation, including consolidation of companies and subsidiaries.
  • Knowledge of taxation principles and their impact on financial statement preparation.
  • Knowledge of investment accounting and business computer systems.
  • Knowledge of company organizational structure and products and services.
  • Verbal and written communication skills for internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to analyze, discover, and solve investment accounting problems; interpret financial documents and data; and analyze and interpret legal requirements.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to interpret changes in financial reporting and legal requirements and apply them to financial statement preparation and company or business-area policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively operate a personal computer and related software using advanced techniques.
  • Ability to apply investment accounting principles, theories, concepts, and practices to specialized, unique, nonrecurring, and complex problems.
  • A valid credit and/or background check is required as part of the selection process.
Responsibilities
  • Perform tasks supporting quarterly investment impairment analysis.
  • Support the investment consolidation evaluation process.
  • Perform portfolio-wide risk-related activities supporting accurate reporting of Nationwide financial information.
  • Manage business partner relationships across internal teams and cultivate collaborative partnerships.
  • Research and advise on accounting for new investment opportunities or unusual transactions.
  • Coordinate the research, analysis, and implementation of new or revised investment accounting policies and procedures.
  • Lead the development of recommendations to enhance, improve, or facilitate job performance, processing, or workflow.
  • Advise senior management on industry practices for acquiring data, recording and analyzing data, and preparing complex investment accounting transactions and statements.
  • Develop and submit complex investment accounting and financial transactions required for proper reporting.
  • Advise management on the accuracy of reports, forms, and data provided to internal and external clients or customers.
  • Coordinate the development of actions and policies addressing unfavorable financial situations identified through investment accounting analysis.
  • Monitor changes to generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements and advise management on their internal impact.
  • Act as project lead in developing and designing new and enhanced systems and processes within assigned areas.
  • Guide the preparation and analysis of complex pro forma financial data required for compliance with new requirements.
  • Provide consultation to management using financial data and analysis to solve administrative and operating problems.
  • Consult on supplemental reporting requirements for company and business areas.
  • Coordinate and lead the preparation of complex financial information for internal and external auditors, the Internal Revenue Service, state examiners, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Provide consulting on special reports and presentations.
  • Serve as a lead consultant to other investment accountants on selected projects.
