Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience demonstrating proficiency in all areas of Medical Assisting is required.
  • Demonstrated Medical Assistant competencies acquired through a Medical Assistant certificate, associate degree in Medical Assisting, emergency medical technician credential, patient care technician experience, one clinical rotation as a nursing student, home health aide experience, or physician assistant program candidacy are required.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong customer and interpersonal relationships with patients, family members, staff, and providers.
  • The candidate must demonstrate willingness and competency to train, mentor, and guide others in assigned practices.
  • Experience with computer systems and web-based applications is required.
  • The candidate must be certified in CPR.
  • The candidate must have physical stamina to spend many hours per day on their feet.
  • The candidate must be able to lift up to 10 pounds with some frequency.
  • The candidate must be able to position patients for specific procedures and examinations.
  • The candidate must readily adjust to change and handle a rapid-paced environment while continuing to provide high-quality, efficient service.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a role model and mentor by providing support, training, direction, and knowledge to Medical Assistants, student externs, and other non-licensed staff within assigned practices.
  • Provide direction and oversight for compliance and regulatory matters, referring issues to the Practice Manager.
  • Act as a lead person in the daily operations of the office and research, prioritize, and follow up on incoming issues and concerns addressed to the Practice Manager.
  • Serve as a liaison with administrative staff across administrative and clinical departments as requested and work to improve and maintain patient access.
  • Work with Practice Managers, physicians, nursing staff, and other clinical providers to ensure effective and efficient patient flow.
  • Support non-licensed staff through workflow, computer-system, and office-process changes and work with Practice Managers to identify training needs.
  • Complete pre-visit planning, including reviewing clinical assessments, Health Care Proxy statuses, immunization statuses, test results, consult reports, and the patient's appointment purpose.
  • Greet patients, identify them using a second identifier, assess acute medical needs, and record pertinent patient information in EPIC according to practice protocol.
  • Perform medical assisting duties including vital signs, height and weight measurement, electrocardiograms, phlebotomy, pulse oximetry, spirometry, dressing changes, suture removal, and assistance with specialized testing or procedures.
  • Maintain examination rooms, equipment, and inventory levels between patients and at the end of each day.
  • Sanitize equipment and instruments, replenish stock, and maintain calibration records and logs.
  • Follow policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines for cleaning and disposing of hazardous materials, including blood and bodily fluid spills.
  • Assist providers with office-based clinical procedures and examinations, serve as a chaperone when requested, assist with pap smears, cultures, suturing, and biopsies, and support specimen collection, labeling, and logging.
  • Complete point-of-care office-based testing, including iFOB, INR, glucose, A1C, urinalysis, and HCG, as ordered.
  • Perform and log quality-control testing on office-based test kits according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Collect specimens and perform office-based testing according to kit instructions.
  • Document test results and associated charges, report results to providers or patients according to workflow, and follow up as instructed.
  • Administer subcutaneous and intramuscular medications and injections as ordered by providers and document the activity in the patient's electronic record.
  • Reconcile patient-care logs periodically, research and follow up on incomplete entries, reschedule patients as needed, document follow-up activities, and notify providers of missed appointments and tests.
  • Coordinate and assist with scheduling and tracking outside tests, procedures, and specialist referrals.
  • Provide patients with education materials and instructions and assist with transportation arrangements.
  • Ensure referrals, prior authorizations, and other required documentation are in place, initiate them when necessary, and track activities and results according to department protocol.
  • Follow up with patients or providers when tests, procedures, or consultations are not completed within the established timeframe or when patients decline or cannot comply.
  • Receive and prioritize calls and portal messages on behalf of providers, return patient calls to provide information or education as requested, release results by phone, letter, or portal, and coordinate follow-up.
  • Review daily missed appointments with providers and contact and reschedule patients who need to reschedule.

  • Experience with EPIC is a plus.
  • Phlebotomy skills are helpful.

Beth Israel Lahey Health rolls out Heidi's AI scribing to all physicians after 90% report better patient presence

Beth Israel Lahey Health is rolling out Heidi's ambient AI scribing tool to all its physicians following a successful trial across its facilities. The health system, which serves over 6,000 providers across 14 hospitals and 175 primary care practices, prioritises addressing physician burnout, with nearly half of US physicians reporting burnout. During a six-month trial offering Heidi to 1,000 providers, the majority adopted the technology. Survey results showed 89% were satisfied with note quality, 90% felt more present with patients, 74% reduced after-hours work time, and 82% experienced reduced cognitive load during visits. The implementation demonstrates how ambient AI can deliver immediate relief to physicians whilst benefiting patients and the healthcare system. Heidi supports over 2 million consultations weekly globally and has raised $96.6 million from investors including Point72 Private Investments and Blackbird.
