Many innovations have a crucial graduation date: when they move from speculative RD to real-world deployment and utility. One of the more significant transitions underway is the rise of “autonomy as a service” (AaaS), a model where self-driving capabilities are not just embedded in cars but delivered as scalable platforms that are often entirely devoid of human drivers. This, in turn, is giving rise to “driver-out” vehicles: machines that operate with no safety driver on board, signaling a bold leap toward fully autonomous logistics and mobility systems. Look no further for the tech’s graduation date than May Mobility’s recent partnership with Uber to provide thousands of vehicles with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology for proof of where the landscape could be heading. “We know from the Waymo service that people are willing to wait longer for an autonomous vehicle. They’re willing to pay more, they prefer it so strongly,” Edwin Olson, CEO and co-founder of May Mobility, told PYMNTS. “And for companies like Uber, they know they need to be able to compete with that.”
May Mobility, a U.S. autonomous driving technology developer, has received a strategic investment of ¥1 billion (approximately $7 million) from Japanese trading company Itochu. The investment aims to introduce May Mobility's autonomous driving technology to the Japanese market.
Japanese trading house Itochu has invested 1 billion yen ($6.9 million) in U.S. autonomous driving startup May Mobility. The investment, made in April, is part of a capital and business alliance aimed at introducing May Mobility's services to Japan's roads. Details of the partnership will be finalized later.
Uber is bringing more robotaxis onto its platform through multiple announcements in the last week—the latest coming yesterday is a collaboration with autonomous vehicle (AV) company Pony.ai—as CEO Dara Khoshrowshahi said AVs are critical for the company's growth."We are confident that AV technology is the single greatest opportunity ahead for Uber. And we are laser-focused on bringing more partners and more AVs, in more places, onto the Uber platform," he wrote in the company's Q1 2025 earnings statement. The partnership with China-based Pony.ai is expected to launch in the Middle East later this year, with additional international markets to be added down the road, the companies said.Uber app users will have the chance to have a trip fulfilled by a Pony.ai autonomous vehicle once they are available on the platform. The vehicles will have a safety operator on board during the pilot phase.“At Pony.ai, our vision is to develop autonomous driving technology that is not only safe and reliable but also scalable, transforming daily transportation,” said James Peng, co-founder and CEO of Pony.ai. “Partnering with Uber accelerates our shared mission to make autonomous mobility a real, everyday experience for more consumers around the world. By combining our proven autonomous systems with Uber’s unparalleled ride-hailing platform, we’re poised to set a new standard for the commercialization of driverless services, starting in the Middle East before expanding to new markets.”
Lyft plans to start adding autonomous vehicles (AVs) to its ridesharing platform as soon as this summer. “We recently signed agreements with partners like May Mobility, Mobileye and Marubeni to start rolling out AVs on our platform as soon as this summer,” Jeremy Bird, executive vice president of driver experience at Lyft, wrote in a Thursday (March 20) blog post. “And over time, AVs will account for a larger share of cars, and a larger percentage of rides.”. Bird wrote this in a blog post addressing how the debut of AVs may affect the drivers who offer rides through the platform. He wrote that while Lyft doesn’t have all the answers, the company expects that there will still be opportunities for drivers because the addition of AVs won’t necessarily mean there will be fewer rides to be served by drivers
