Requirements
  • A BS/BA degree or applicable experience is required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience, including large case underwriting and substandard cases, is required.
  • PC knowledge including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and business financial documents is required.
  • The candidate must be production and quality oriented.
  • The candidate must be able to make real-time independent decisions regarding life insurance applications.
  • The candidate must effectively utilize available resources and document cases and the thought process.
  • The candidate must be able to review complex personal and financial cases.
  • The candidate must demonstrate understanding of the reinsurance process, including when cases need to be submitted and how to do so.
  • The candidate must be proficient in financial underwriting, including underwriting business cases.
  • The candidate must have an agile and process-improvement mindset.
  • The candidate must be innovative and data driven.
  • The candidate must demonstrate advanced technical underwriting knowledge and skills, including medical terminology.
  • The candidate must demonstrate superior written and verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Review life insurance applications within the limits of authority, including all underwriting requirements and other evidence of insurability, to determine acceptability and detect and deter attempts to defraud the company.
  • Order only additional requirements that are appropriate and necessary for assessing the risk.
  • Make appropriate decisions on cases within approval authority and, through the referral process, recommend a course of action or final decision on applications outside approval authority or exceeding the individual experience level.
  • Maintain favorable relationships with the field and communicate company positions and decisions to broker partners in a positive and empathetic manner.
  • Provide counsel and advice to agency offices regarding submission and placement of business.
  • Identify process changes to improve customer experience.
  • Communicate with reinsurers on cases as required.
  • Approve applications for policy issue up to $5,000,000 for all ages and ratings.
  • Meet or exceed productivity and quality guidelines established by the department or team.
  • Assist the immediate manager with special departmental projects as directed.
  • Provide management with information and possible solutions regarding issues affecting the team, its agencies, or the department.
  • Suggest ways to increase approval authority or provide additional training for underwriters who refer cases.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced underwriters in the department, including second-signature responsibilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • FLMI, FALU, or CLU designation is preferred.
