Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year of related experience working with youth is required.
  • The employee must obtain Water Safety training within 90 days of hire.
  • The employee must be able to obtain a commercial driver's license within 90 days of employment, if applicable to the position.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain mandatory Department of Transportation/commercial driver's license medical certification, if applicable to the position.
  • The employee must successfully pass and participate in the mandatory Department of Transportation/commercial driver's license drug and alcohol testing program, if applicable.
  • The employee must successfully pass any contract-required background check and drug test.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • The employee must be able to stand, walk, run, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, talk, and hear; use hands to handle objects, tools, equipment, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and regularly lift or move 30 pounds and occasionally more.
Responsibilities
  • Assist students in developing positive social skills through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and teaching healthy habits for stress relief, employability, and workplace success.
  • Participate in the BMS and/or SCC program as necessary to support proper workplace and community conduct, appearance, and behavior.
  • Serve as a positive role model by displaying appropriate etiquette, timeliness, professionalism, and dress.
  • Provide on-site supervision of recreational activities for students with various skill levels and backgrounds while ensuring a safe and healthy atmosphere.
  • Ensure that self-directed activities are conducted according to recreational plans.
  • Identify and implement process or procedure changes to achieve full student participation.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and supervise recurring group activities such as basketball, volleyball, and softball, including reservations, transportation, related arrangements, and activity information.
  • Identify and recommend changes or modifications to the recreation and physical fitness program.
  • Perform special assignments in facility-wide programs or volunteer-sponsored activities.
  • Meet individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in recreational and physical fitness activities.
  • Give students practical advice and guidance and propose solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values.
  • Ensure facilities are properly prepared and that necessary equipment and supplies are available for scheduled activities.
  • Operate government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities.
  • Make reservations, collect payments, and distribute information concerning games and activities; ensure students understand safety requirements for activities, facilities, and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with and enforcement of all safety rules and regulations.
  • Submit monthly recreation and other required reports.
  • Communicate with students and answer questions to provide information, inspections, and counsel.
  • Maintain order, recognize social, behavioral, or disciplinary problems, promote harmony among students, and obtain assistance from center staff for complicated problems.
  • Instruct students on good sportsmanship, team cooperation, and group activities that support healthy interaction skills.
  • Carry out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction from center staff.
  • Interact professionally and calmly with students requiring a high degree of interpersonal skill, including during potentially hostile exchanges.
  • Encourage participation and responsiveness among students who may resist leadership or direction.
  • Participate in group sports or instruct students on proper activity engagement techniques, including activities requiring extreme physical exertion.
  • Complete mandated training requirements and departmental work accurately and on time.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with center staff and students and develop positive working relationships across departments.
  • Follow company standard operating procedures, personnel policies, and safety policies, including use of required personal protective equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in counseling, social work, rehabilitation, education, recreation, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a recreation program within a school or park system is preferred.
  • A commercial driver's license is preferred.
