Rapid City, Sanford Health unveil sports complex partnership.

Rapid City, Sanford Health unveil sports complex partnership. Naming rights agreement is latest among iconic sports facilities with the Sanford Health brand. August 6, 2026 As athletes and other supporters listen, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun (left) and Sanford Black Hills President and CEO Kyle Wiese announce their partnership on a new community sports complex. (Photo by Paul Heinert, Sanford Health) Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun and Rapid City Sports Commission Executive Director Domico Rodriguez today announced a corporate partnership agreement with Sanford Health for naming recognition for the new community sports complex. Salamun and Rodriquez were joined by Sanford Health officials the morning of Aug. 6 for the partnership agreement announcement. The brief ceremony was held on a strip of frontage land along East Mall Drive in Rapid City, South Dakota, overlooking a 22-acre parcel of land that was recently donated by Pete Lien & Sons and approved by the Rapid City Common Council to serve as the future location for the multipurpose sports complex. "I am pleased to announce that Sanford Health will serve as our premier partner, including holding the naming recognition for Rapid City's new sports complex," said Salamun. "This partnership brings valuable experience and a shared commitment to creating a first-class facility that will serve our youth, residents, and visitors for generations to come." The $10 million, 20-year partnership with Sanford Health begins in 2027. The investment will support the new sports complex facility and operations, and provides Sanford Health with naming recognition for the sports complex and a dedicated space within the complex for use by Sanford for sports medicine and sports performance activities, among other recognition rights and privileges. On most days, these 22 acres of prairie grassland in northern Rapid City sit quiet except for brisk breezes of South Dakota winds and the plodding of nearby cattle herds. In a few years, a large complex will tower over the area, home to numerous competitive and recreational events. Officials are hoping to break ground this fall and get dirt moving for the facility that is set to open by 2029. Latest in Sanford Sports athletic development. The naming rights agreement is the latest in a number of iconic sports, community and regional facilities with the Sanford Health brand. Sanford Health has been involved in athletic development for more than 25 years. These efforts include operating the 500-acre Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls and partnering on the 400,000-square-foot Fargo Parks Sports Center at the Sanford Sports Complex in Fargo, North Dakota. "Sanford Health is proud to partner with the City of Rapid City on this historic investment in health, sports and community," said Kyle Wiese, Sanford Black Hills president and CEO. "When Sanford Health expanded into the Black Hills, we made a commitment to meaningfully invest in the people and communities we serve. This partnership is another example of keeping that promise. Thank you to the City of Rapid City and all those who helped bring this vision to life." Sanford Sports operates sports performance, sports academy and sports events in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota. Annually, Sanford Sports has more than one million athlete contacts, runs more than 250 club teams and hosts nearly 100 tournaments and spectator events ranging from youth and high school to major college and professional. "Sanford's investment into the complex will help benefit Rapid City and our athletes for the next generation," said Rodriguez. "They have been extremely successful in the Sioux Falls and Fargo markets, and we are excited to partner with them on this project." Next steps for sports complex. In July, the Rapid City Council approved an agreement between Pete Lien & Sons and the City of Rapid City for the donation of 22.65 acres of land located between East Mall Drive, Seger Drive, North Lacrosse Street and Tish Boulevard. At the July 20 meeting, the Council also approved a contract with TSP, Inc. to serve as architect for the project and an agreement with Sports Facilities Management LLC to serve as manager for the facility once it is constructed. Next, the City's Legal and Finance Committee will consider the naming recognition agreement as well as an agreement with Scull Construction Service, Inc. to serve as construction manager for the project.

Women's correctional facility opens in Rapid City.

Women's correctional facility opens in Rapid City. Native women remain disproportionately incarcerated on July 20, 2026 New Women's Correctional Facility in Rapid City, SD. A 102,750 square foot complex designed to expand treatment, education, and reentry programs for incarcerated women. (Photo by Ernestine Anunkasan Hopa) RAPID CITY - State leaders gathered Friday, July 10 to celebrate the opening of South Dakota's new Women's Correctional Facility, a 102,750 square foot complex designed to expand treatment, education, and reentry programs for incarcerated women. Governor Larry Rhoden led the ribbon cutting alongside correctional officials, local legislators, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun, and members of the Rapid City Police Department. "This facility will help us keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free," Rhoden said. He added that the state's investment reflects a commitment to rehabilitation. "We are committed to rehabilitation and recovery, and this new facility will help us better serve the women in our correctional system." The facility includes three 96 bed housing units, each built with space for group treatment and programming. One unit is dedicated entirely to a 96 bed therapeutic community focused on addressing criminal thinking and substance use disorders. A separate 12 bed Mother Infant building allows eligible mothers to remain connected to their newborns while receiving parenting support. The facility opens as South Dakota grapples with the world's highest rate of women's incarceration and long standing disparities that place Native women at the center of the crisis. According to a 2024 report from the Prison Policy Initiative, South Dakota incarcerates women at the highest rate in the world, 338 per 100,000, a disparity that falls disproportionately on Native American women. According to the Department of Corrections' 2024-2025 statistical reports, Native American women make up approximately 63% of the more than 500 women incarcerated in South Dakota, despite Native people comprising only about 8.5% of the state's population. Advocates and lawmakers have called the disparity "alarming," pointing to long standing systemic issues in sentencing, access to treatment, and the impact of drug related offenses. Secretary of Corrections Nick Lamb said substance use remains the primary driver of incarceration. "Ninety seven percent of the women who enter our system have a substance use disorder," Lamb said. "This facility expands our ability to provide treatment, counseling, and life skills to help these women succeed when they return to their communities." For more than a decade, South Dakota was the only state in the nation to make drug ingestion, simply having a controlled substance in one's system, a felony. Before lawmakers reduced the charge to a misdemeanor, 71 women were imprisoned with ingestion as their highest level offense, and DOC data shows that 77% of incarcerated women were serving time for non violent drug crimes, with ingestion trailing closely behind. Because Native women are disproportionately charged with drug related offenses, tribal advocates say the ingestion law created a revolving door. Technical violations, missed appointments, failed UAs, curfew issues, or transportation barriers, remain the number one reason women return to prison. With a 66% recidivism rate among Native women, advocates estimate that well over 100 Native women currently incarcerated are there due to residual effects of the old ingestion law, even if the original felony law has since been downgraded. To strengthen reentry opportunities, the Department of Corrections has partnered with Western Dakota Technical College to offer a one semester Business Hospitality program. DOC is also working with Sanford Health to launch a three week Patient Care Technician program aimed at preparing participants for entry level healthcare roles. DOC officials said transfers from Pierre to the new Rapid City facility will begin next month following staff training. (Contact Ernestine Anunkasan Hopa at [email protected])
