Expedia beats Q2 expectations with $4.32B revenue, up 14% year on year

Expedia reported second-quarter revenue of $4.32 billion, beating analyst estimates of $4.17 billion and marking 14% year-on-year growth. The online travel agency's non-GAAP earnings per share of $5.76 exceeded consensus estimates by 9.7%. The company guided third-quarter revenue to $4.70 billion at the midpoint, slightly above analyst expectations. Operating margin improved to 18.5%, up from 12.8% in the same quarter last year. Expedia booked 111.5 million room nights during the quarter, an increase of 6 million year on year. However, analysts project revenue growth will decelerate to 5.1% over the next 12 months, down from the company's three-year compounded annual growth rate of 8.6%.

$1 billion travel agent platform Fora just landed its first CMO.

$1 billion travel agent platform Fora just landed its first CMO. Aug 5, 2026, 3:30 AM PT Destination: Fora. Fora Travel, the AI-powered platform that links travel agents (the human kind) with people planning their vacations, has appointed its first chief marketing officer, CMO Insider can exclusively reveal. Alanna Gregory has joined the company from Block, where she was VP of marketing. The hire comes on the heels of Fora raising $60 million in a funding round at a $1 billion valuation. The company said it would use those funds to bolster the AI tools it offers its travel planners. Gregory told me her immediate marketing priorities are threefold: building an iconic brand, growing its advisor network, and developing a "best in class" sales and marketing organization. Fora's consumer play. Fora offers travel advisors tech tools and training to help them build their businesses in exchange for a cut of their sales and an annual fee. Travelers looking for an agent fill out a short questionnaire about their ideal getaways before being matched. The company said it has more than 15,000 advisors who have booked more than $3 billion in travel since its founding in 2021. Allen Adamson, cofounder of the marketing firm Metaforce, told me that while Fora has made ground with investors and advisors, it still needs to work on building its consumer brand. "The CMO's job is to make a promise to travelers. Fora does not have one yet. Advisors know Fora. Travelers do not," he said. Fora is up against formidable competition, from well-known travel brands like Expedia and Airbnb, to the AI chatbots consumers increasingly use to plan their trips. Adamson said Fora's promise needs to center on the experience that machines can't fake: "The judgment of someone who's been there and done that, and trust." Gregory said Fora's marketing is focused on building the future of human expertise in travel. Its core market is millennials, who are often juggling the logistics of traveling with multigenerational families, she added. Gregory is designing Fora's marketing organization 'for the AI era' AI is still top of mind. Gregory said Fora is investing heavily in its Reddit presence, where many of its advisors are active, given that the platform is often highly cited by LLMs. She's also focused on designing the marketing team "for the AI era." From product marketers to data experts, the team will contribute to a centralized "context library" database containing materials on brand messaging, audience personas, and sales call transcripts, so that the entire organization is training on the same data and can automate some of their work. Fora has already produced some buzzy marketing in the past, mainly focused on partnerships, such as its tie-up with the luggage brand Away and its launch of a concierge service with the dog-friendly airline Bark Air. Gregory said she intends to draw on inspiration from her time working on Block's Cash App, which she said was "completely unafraid to take big, bold bets" such as its launch of the browser-based game "Cash Apples," which had a $500,000 prize pool. "It was highly contested within the creative marketing organization, and we stuck by it," Gregory said. "It was a hit." Gregory said that the Fora brand will similarly begin testing new marketing formats and "maybe take some of those bold bets."

Expedia sees golden cross and raised earnings estimates amid $5B buyback expansion

Expedia Group's stock recently formed a "golden cross" — a bullish technical signal where the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average. Analysts simultaneously raised near-term earnings estimates for the online travel company. The technical pattern and improved forecasts have drawn attention to Expedia's fundamentals. The company is pushing into higher-margin B2B services, loyalty programmes, and app-driven bookings to offset pressure in its consumer travel business. Expedia recently expanded its share buyback authorisation by up to $5 billion, adding to $4.1 billion already deployed. The capital return programme may support earnings per share growth. However, investors face risks from potentially softer US travel demand and intense competition. Some analysts project revenue reaching $18.3 billion by 2029, below more optimistic forecasts of $18.7 billion.

Here is some analysis on what might have caused this price movement. Analysis: The move appears tied to a mix of fresh analyst optimism and continued confidence in Expedia's growth story ahead of its next earnings report. Investors also seem to be responding to the company's strong first-quarter execution, ongoing buybacks, and expansion of its B2B travel platform. A recent analyst update assigned an Outperform rating and a $334 price target, signaling notable upside from recent trading levels. In first-quarter 2026 results, Expedia said gross bookings rose 13%, revenue increased 15%, and adjusted EBITDA jumped 83% year over year. Management kept its full-year 2026 outlook in place, including revenue guidance of $15.6 billion to $16.0 billion, which may be reinforcing confidence ahead of the August 5, 2026 earnings release. Expedia also repurchased $700 million of stock in the first quarter, authorized a new $5 billion buyback, and announced a deal to acquire CarTrawler to deepen its B2B mobility and travel-services offering. Expedia uses ai-driven Service Telemetry Analyzer to accelerate incident investigation.

Expedia uses ai-driven Service Telemetry Analyzer to accelerate incident investigation. Follow InfoQ on. Expedia Group has introduced Service Telemetry Analyzer (STAR), an internal AI-assisted observability platform that helps engineers investigate production incidents by analyzing service telemetry and generating structured root cause assessments. The system combines operational metrics with large language models (LLMs) through predefined diagnostic workflows, aiming to reduce the time engineers spend identifying the source of service degradation while keeping humans responsible for validation and decision-making. Rather than adopting autonomous AI agents, the platform follows a deterministic workflow in which telemetry is collected, analyzed using domain-specific prompts, consolidated into intermediate findings, and summarized into a final report containing potential root causes and recommended next steps. Describing the project's goal, the team wrote, Its objective with this service was to minimize the time to know (TTK) and time to recover (TTR). The platform is implemented as a FastAPI application that integrates with Datadog to retrieve service metrics and an internal generative AI gateway that manages authentication and access to LLM providers. The workflow uses prompt chaining, allowing multiple specialized analyses to be performed before producing a consolidated diagnosis. Expedia said the current implementation does not use capabilities such as function calling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), memory, or autonomous tool use, instead relying on predefined workflows to generate consistent analyses. STAR focuses on standardized infrastructure telemetry collected from Kubernetes-based services and JVM applications. The system analyzes metrics including request throughput, latency, HTTP, gRPC, and GraphQL error rates, CPU and memory utilization, container restart events, Kubernetes readiness and liveness probe failures, Java heap utilization, and garbage collection activity. Expedia explains that infrastructure metrics provide a consistent view across services developed using different programming languages and frameworks. As the platform evolved, Expedia replaced FastAPI background tasks with a Celery-based asynchronous architecture using Redis as both the message broker and result backend. The engineering team states that most processing consists of I/O bound operations involving telemetry retrieval and LLM requests. The asynchronous execution model allows STAR to process multiple analysis tasks concurrently while accommodating rate limits imposed by Datadog and the company's internal AI gateway. The company reports that STAR has been used to support production incident investigations, post-incident analysis, Kubernetes troubleshooting, and JVM memory diagnostics. Engineers review the generated findings before acting on recommendations, making the platform an assistive tool rather than an autonomous operational system. The blog also describes ongoing work to expand the platform. Planned enhancements include incorporating service dependency information, additional operational metadata, Model Context Protocol (MCP) based tool integrations, and conversational interfaces. Expedia is also evaluating STAR as part of its chaos engineering practices to help analyze the results of controlled failure experiments. Prompt management, tracing, and evaluation are currently supported through Langfuse, while system performance is assessed using subject matter expert reviews and user feedback. Leela kumili.
