Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, and walk as required for heavy or hard work.
  • The employee must be able to work closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, near the deceased, with hands in water, and with electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
  • The employee must be able to effectively communicate with staff and patients.
  • The employee must be able to adapt to changing environments.
Responsibilities
  • Observe and immediately report all patient concerns and changes in condition to a registered nurse.
  • Assist the registered nurse with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care duties.
  • Record vital signs; assist with personal hygiene and other patient comfort measures; and record oral intake, outputs, temperature, blood pressure, and other monitoring.
  • Assist with specimen collection and other activities of assigned patients.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and provide safety for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicate with the registered nurse regarding nutrition issues, including poor appetite or lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assist the department with administrative tasks that support department operations.
  • Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements through computer-based learning, training, in-services, or competency validation when applicable.
