Requirements
  • Current appropriate state licensure and compliance with practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • One year of registered nurse experience.
  • At least six months of nephrology experience before independently providing dialysis and ultrafiltration services without another dialysis registered nurse.
  • At least six months of nephrology experience before independently providing apheresis services without another apheresis registered nurse.
  • Strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients.
  • Successful completion of training in the theory and practice of care for end-stage renal disease patients through Progressive Renal Education Preparation.
  • Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation recognition.
  • Organizational and time management skills, along with competency in continuing renal and nephrology education.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to direct and supervise Patient Care Technicians, Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technicians, and clerical staff.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training.
  • Ability to meet on-call rotation requirements, including nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel between assigned hospitals and facilities and to regional meetings or educational events.
  • Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients or equipment over 200 pounds with assistance, and lifting chemical and water solutions up to 30 pounds to heights of five feet.
  • Ability to complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
  • Ability to work around potentially infectious material and contagious diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct inpatient patient care across hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, ultrafiltration, and apheresis modalities.
  • Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff, and provide direction and education to intensive care unit staff for continuous renal replacement therapy.
  • Provide prescribed treatment techniques for assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting.
  • Assess patient responses to treatment and make appropriate treatment-plan adjustments in accordance with physician direction.
  • Communicate patient problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, credentialed physician, hospital primary nurse, and other appropriate personnel.
  • Deliver safe and effective care efficiently and within required timeframes.
  • Give organized shift reports and adjust patient schedules to meet the needs of more critical patients based on laboratory results, physician orders, and patient assessments.
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notification of physicians and blood suppliers about adverse reactions.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans.
  • Initiate and communicate with facility nursing staff and hospital personnel as needed.
  • Document treatment information accurately in individual patient and hospital records, including ACES.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare patients and equipment for dialysis treatments and document preparation activities.
  • Perform required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing and, when applicable, initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Operate related equipment safely, perform minor troubleshooting, and use supplies efficiently to prevent waste.
  • Conduct and document dialysis and apheresis machine safety and alarm tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, functional testing, and internal and external disinfection of water and dialysis machines.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Quality Assessment and Improvement activities.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, staff training, and orientation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient and equipment complications.
  • Report new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, and problems according to Adverse Event Report requirements.
  • Provide in-center patient care when assigned.
  • Comply with the Code of Business Conduct, company policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist with projects assigned by the direct supervisor.
  • Participate in on-call coverage for nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
