About the job

Requirements
  • At least 10 years of experience as an investor, banker, consultant, strategic finance leader, chief of staff, or operator in a complex technology or software business, including ownership of ambiguous cross-functional problems such as pricing, deal desk, capacity planning, or strategic planning.
  • Ability to build complex, flexible financial models from scratch, including capacity plans, unit economics, pricing scenarios, and deal economics, and translate the detail into executive-level recommendations.
  • Strategic financial judgment connecting operational choices to growth, gross margin, cash flow, profitability, return on invested capital, and opportunity cost rather than relying on simplistic productivity ratios.
  • Track record of influencing Product, go-to-market, or executive decisions through quantitative analysis, not just reporting on outcomes.
  • Comfort working in a changing environment where data and processes are incomplete, and ability to build frameworks rather than only administer an established recurring process.
  • Ability to represent the team credibly in senior forums, hold a point of view, and challenge weak assumptions constructively.
  • Practical, hands-on use of artificial intelligence to automate workflows, prototype tools, and scale output, expertise in Google Sheets, and ability to use GitLab.
Responsibilities
  • Translate GitLab's long-range strategy into financial scenarios, capacity plans, and investment choices that inform the annual operating plan.
  • Own company-wide initiatives, such as sales and engineering capacity, hosting costs, or product pricing, from problem definition through decision, execution, and handoff to the long-term owner.
  • Build and evolve pricing, packaging, and discounting frameworks using unit economics and market context. Give Sales practical tools, including recommended deal structures, minimum acceptable economics, and clear escalation paths.
  • Partner with Deal Desk to model non-standard and enterprise deals, and advise on financial terms and trade-offs for large, multi-year, usage-based, and partner-led agreements.
  • Design dashboards, budget unlocks, and investment gates that replace one-off approvals with clear guardrails operators can act on independently.
  • Work across Finance, Sales, Product, Engineering, and Data to solve problems that span functions or do not yet have a natural long-term owner.
  • Build the analytical and modeling capability needed for executive decisions, move beyond requested analysis to proactive, prioritized recommendations, and turn complex models into clear recommendations for the chief executive officer, chief financial officer, and senior leadership.
  • Use artificial intelligence and automation to reduce manual data preparation and expand the team's capacity for insight and execution.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience shaping pricing, packaging, or deal-structure decisions using unit economics. Experience with consumption-based or hybrid pricing is particularly helpful.

About the company

GitLab provides a unified DevOps platform that brings together the tools needed for software development, including code hosting, collaboration, CI/CD, issue tracking, and security, all in one application. It works by offering a single subscription-based platform where teams can plan, write, test, review, and deploy code through automated pipelines, reducing the need to manage separate tools. This differs from many competitors that require using a collection of separate products; GitLab consolidates these capabilities into one integrated solution, helping teams work more efficiently. The company's goal is to help organizations speed up software delivery and improve collaboration by simplifying the DevOps process and continuously updating the platform with new features and improvements.

GitLab unveils governed software factory with AI agent orchestration and security controls

GitLab has announced new capabilities for what it calls a "governed software factory", aimed at helping organisations deploy AI-generated software whilst managing risk and cost. The platform now includes goal-driven workflows that automate progression across the software development lifecycle, reducing handoffs between stages. Key additions include GitLab Artifact Central, which centralises containers and packages alongside source code, and GitLab Dependency Firewall, which blocks malicious or non-compliant packages before they enter builds. GitLab Secrets Manager, now generally available, secures credentials in one location. The platform will integrate Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 and 5.1 models for security workflows. New Impact Analytics tools show AI investment costs and outcomes by team and model. GitLab reports active users of agentic software development grew 200% year-over-year over the past three months, with over 70 million developers using the platform.

Ashton Kutcher backed GitLab in $1.5M seed round before $11B IPO, but payout remains undisclosed

GitLab went public in October 2021 at $77 per share, valuing the company at roughly $11 billion. Sound Ventures, the investment firm co-founded by Ashton Kutcher, backed GitLab six years earlier during its $1.5 million seed round in July 2015. Khosla Ventures led that early financing, with Joe Montana's Liquid 2 Ventures also participating. At the time, GitLab had fewer than 10 team members and was still developing its software development collaboration tools. GitLab's shares closed at $103.89 on their first trading day, giving the company a market value of $14.9 billion, according to Reuters. However, neither GitLab nor Sound Ventures disclosed the size of the firm's investment or when shares were sold, making it impossible to calculate Kutcher's actual return.
