Requirements
  • Current appropriate state licensure.
  • Successful completion of a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  • Successful completion of CPR certification.
  • Successful completion of the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failing the test does not preclude employment because reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse for assigned patients in the acute setting, as permitted by state requirements.
  • Perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures for assigned patients according to the current treatment plan and under the direction of the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse.
  • Report and document new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, problems, significant patient-condition changes, and equipment problems to the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse.
  • Provide assigned patient treatments and support a safe and clean working environment.
  • Participate in Quality Enhancement Program and Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement activities, including patient-satisfaction and process-improvement activities.
  • Set up and prime equipment for renal replacement therapies, including hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis, when documented competency and proficiency have been established.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency; obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight; perform vascular-access cannulation as permitted by state requirements; and report difficulties or unusual findings to the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse.
  • Document patient-treatment information accurately in the individual patient record, hospital Electronic Medical System, and Acute Care Electronic System.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are used for every treatment.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs and treatment parameters in the Electronic Medical System and Acute Care Electronic System.
  • Initiate renal replacement treatment according to prescribed orders, including setting blood-flow rate and dialysate-flow rate.
  • Collect and label specimens and ensure their timely delivery to the laboratory according to facility policy.
  • Identify intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed by physician orders or directed by the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse.
  • Perform and document patient interventions, document patient responses, and report changes or unusual findings to the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse.
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment, including arterial and venous monitoring pressures; provide interventions as needed; document treatment; discontinue dialysis according to established procedures; and report unusual findings.
  • Evaluate patients before termination of venous access, obtain blood pressure, achieve hemostasis, apply appropriate dressings, evaluate patients before discharge, and report unusual findings.
  • Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weights, and vital signs with initial identification, and report findings to the Registered Nurse for documentation and follow-up.
  • Initiate basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation measures during cardiac or pulmonary arrest and respond to dialysis-related emergencies.
  • Reinforce patient education provided by the Registered Nurse.
  • Safely operate dialysis-related equipment according to proper procedures.
  • Troubleshoot dialysis-related equipment and treatment issues when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis treatment area.
  • Address blood spills immediately according to bloodborne-pathogen control policies.
  • Operate emergency equipment effectively and efficiently according to standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, staff training, and orientation of new employees as assigned.
  • Maintain current knowledge of dialysis principles and techniques through scheduled in-service classes.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Program Manager.
  • Perform desk and personal-computer work and interact with patients, facility staff, and physicians.
  • Travel between assigned locations and other community locations and attend meetings when required.
