Requirements
  • Graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Sworn officer employed by a Vanderburgh County law enforcement agency in a part-time or full-time position.
  • Maintain all Indiana administrative and statutory certifications as a sworn Indiana law enforcement officer throughout employment.
  • Perform all duties of a sworn police officer effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and student advocacy through a positive attitude, approachability, adaptability, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Use a closed-circuit television system.
  • De-escalate and resolve situations.
  • Do not engage in pursuits off campus; coordinate all pursuits with on-duty police officers within the campus jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Promote an inclusive environment in which every individual feels respected and valued.
Responsibilities
  • Protect the safety of all persons, assets, and property on Ivy Tech campuses.
  • Secure campus buildings, grounds, and parking lots.
  • Document and investigate instances or reports of crime.
  • Report violations of federal, state, and municipal laws and Ivy Tech policies and procedures to Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively, determine appropriate action, and respond accordingly.
  • Contact police, health services, or emergency services as needed.
  • Provide escort services to students and staff as requested or required.
  • Respond to fire and security alarms and investigate disturbances.
  • Provide rapid response to non-acute first-aid or health-related situations.
  • Provide general assistance to students and visitors, including directions and phone numbers.
  • Patrol buildings to identify safety concerns.
  • Lock and unlock buildings and offices as required.
  • Evacuate classrooms and buildings during emergencies as necessary.
  • Assist with Clery Act compliance and incident reporting.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority under the Jeanne Clery Act.
