Trane and Carrier hit record backlogs as AI data centre cooling demand surges 300%

Trane Technologies and Carrier Worldwide are capitalising on surging demand for data centre cooling equipment driven by artificial intelligence expansion. Trane reported a record backlog of $12.1 billion in second-quarter 2026 earnings, up 70% year over year, with a book-to-bill ratio of 135%. Carrier's backlog reached $8 billion, increasing 40% annually and 20% sequentially. The company's data centre orders jumped 300% year over year, whilst commercial orders rose 65%. High-power AI chips generate substantial heat, making cooling critical infrastructure. US electricity demand is expected to rise 60% between 2025 and 2045, partly due to AI. Both companies' price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios currently trade above their five-year averages.

Trane and Eaton tout integrated designs for AI data center power and cooling systems.

Trane and Eaton tout integrated designs for AI data center power and cooling systems. Vendors promise big savings for digital infrastructure operators August 19, 2026 Cooling vendor Trane and power technology firm Eaton have joined forces to develop an integrated architecture for thermal management and electrical systems in AI data centers. The duo claim the reference design is the first of its kind, and that using it to design systems for AI data centers can lead to energy efficiency gains of 15 percent and cut copper use by up to 80 percent. Installation is also cheaper than conventional low-voltage design processes, the companies added. The new reference design is included in both the Trane Continuum Rubin DSX and Eaton Beam Rubin DSX platforms, which are designed to be compatible with Nvidia's DSX platforms for building AI data centers. "AI and high-performance computing are transforming the demands placed on data centers, and customers want solutions that can keep pace with their needs," said Mauro J. Atalla, senior vice president and chief technology and sustainability officer at Trane Technologies. "By combining our advanced thermal management solutions with Eaton's innovative power management solutions, we're delivering a coordinated design that helps customers accelerate deployment, improve efficiency and confidently plan to scale for the future." The combined approach establishes a more consistent, predictable method for planning and delivering electrical, thermal and digital control infrastructure required for AI-driven environments. This apparently simplifies setup, reduces risk during deployment, and improves overall performance for today's technologies. "We're advancing the industry standard for speed of deployment by progressing reference designs into unified systems teams can deploy repeatedly. Aligned with the Nvidia DSX platform, we're integrating our medium-voltage power systems and white space thermal management solutions with Trane's advanced thermal management system architecture to help accelerate AI-factory deployment at scale," said Michael Regelski, senior vice president and chief technology officer for the electrical sector at Eaton. Both companies have pledged to evolve the system as emerging liquid cooling technologies and direct current architectures become mainstream. "AI factories demand tightly coordinated power, cooling and compute infrastructure to operate efficiently at scale. By aligning with the Nvidia Omniverse DSX blueprint, Trane Technologies and Eaton are helping customers reduce complexity and accelerate deployment of next-generation AI data centers," said Vladimir Troy, vice president of AI infrastructure at Nvidia. "This new integrated approach supports the robust, scalable foundations enterprises need to unlock the full potential of generative and reasoning AI and turn data into faster, smarter outcomes." Trane Technologies and Eaton unveil AI data centre design cutting installation costs by 30%

Trane Technologies and Eaton have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate AI data centre deployment through an integrated power and cooling reference design. The system replaces traditional siloed design processes with a unified approach that achieves up to 15% combined energy efficiency gains, cuts copper use by as much as 80%, and reduces installation costs by up to 30% compared to conventional low-voltage designs. The reference design is included in both companies' platforms and built in alignment with NVIDIA DSX platforms. It enables power distribution and cooling systems to exchange data and respond dynamically to operational needs. As global data centre capacity may nearly triple by 2030, with AI driving approximately 70% of that growth, the coordinated architecture aims to simplify setup, reduce deployment risk, and improve overall performance whilst supporting future liquid cooling technologies and direct current architectures.

Trane Technologies and Eaton collaborate on industry-first Reference Design to help boost AI data center efficiency and cut installation costs.

Trane Technologies and Eaton collaborate on industry-first Reference Design to help boost AI data center efficiency and cut installation costs. * Trane and Eaton integrated design built for the widely adopted NVIDIA DSX AI Factory Reference Design. * New joint approach advances higher power designs for AI data centers to speed development, boost energy efficiency up to 15%, reduce installation costs up to 30%, and cut copper use up to 80%. SWORDS, Ireland & CLEVELAND-(BUSINESS WIRE)-Trane Technologies (NYSE:TT), a global climate innovator, and intelligent power management company Eaton (NYSE:ETN) today announced a strategic collaboration integrating advanced thermal management and electrical system architectures to help accelerate AI-factory deployment, enhance efficiency and lower costs. Trane Technologies and Eaton are introducing a first-of-its kind reference design that replaces a traditionally slow, manual and siloed design process with a unified, intelligent system for power and cooling for next-generation data centers. By advancing medium-voltage designs for higher-power density AI factories, the companies can achieve combined energy efficiency gains of up to 15%, cut copper use by as much as 80% and reduce installation costs by up to 30% compared to conventional, low-voltage designs, while enabling faster deployment and reducing complexity. As global data center capacity may almost triple by 2030, with AI driving about 70% of that growth, the reference design provides a more resource-efficient approach to scaling data center infrastructure. The new reference design is included in both the Trane(R) Continuum Rubin DSX and Eaton Beam Rubin DSX platforms, built in alignment with the NVIDIA DSX platforms, with Eaton's technology helping provide power distribution for the Trane platform. By combining the expertise of both companies into coordinated reference designs, data center customers can help accelerate development cycles through pre-coordinated thermal and electrical power systems from grid to chip. The companies' approach breaks down traditional systems-in-silos architectures, enabling power distribution and cooling systems to exchange leading indicators, respond more dynamically to needs and enhance data center performance. "AI and high-performance computing are transforming the demands placed on data centers, and customers want solutions that can keep pace with their needs," said Mauro J. Atalla, Senior Vice President, Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer, Trane Technologies. Aligned with the NVIDIA DSX platform, we're integrating our medium-voltage power systems and white space thermal management solutions with Trane's advanced thermal management system architecture to help accelerate AI-factory deployment at scale," said Michael Regelski, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Electrical Sector, Eaton. The Eaton and Trane Technologies reference design is built to work smoothly with the NVIDIA(R) Omniverse(TM) DSX Blueprint for AI data centers. The combined approach establishes a more consistent, predictable method for planning and delivering electrical, thermal and digital control infrastructure required for AI-driven environments. The coordinated architecture simplifies setup, reduces risk during deployment, and improves overall performance for today's technologies.
