Tryon elected next president of ASHP. Published: August 6, 2026 Lemke, Miller Elected to Board of Directors Jennifer E. Tryon, PharmD, MS, FASHP, was elected as ASHP's new president-elect, and Todd D. Lemke, PharmD, CPEL, DPLA, FASHP, and Katherine (Kat) A. Miller, PharmD, MHA, CPEL, DPLA, FASHP, FKCHP, were elected to serve on the ASHP Board of Directors. Tryon is the senior vice president and chief pharmacy officer at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan. She recently completed a term on the ASHP Board of Directors and previously held leadership roles as the chair of the Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders and the Council on Pharmacy Management. She is faculty for the ASHP Foundation's Pharmacy Leadership Academy and has served on section advisory groups and the ASHP House of Delegates. She is a past president of the Oregon Society of Health-System Pharmacists and has held other elected leadership roles in pharmacy associations. Tryon was the 2021 recipient of the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders Distinguished Service Award. Lemke is the regional director of pharmacy services at CentraCare in St. Cloud, Minnesota. His ASHP service includes terms as chair and vice chair of the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP), SICP Advisory Group on Small and Rural Hospitals, and the Council on Pharmacy Practice. ASHP accreditation strengthens clinical pharmacy training in Pakistan. Karen Blum Published: May 19, 2026 For years, Pakistan did not have a structured residency pathway for pharmacists to develop the skills needed for specialized hospital and clinical pharmacy practice. But that changed in 2020, thanks to a team of pharmacists who helped Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore become the first hospital in Pakistan to achieve ASHP accreditation for its residency program. "This was a major milestone for us, not only as an institutional achievement but also as part of our responsibility to advance pharmacy practice in Pakistan," said Omar Akhlaq Bhutta, the hospital's director of pharmacy. Today, the hospital operates first-year residency programs in Lahore and Peshawar, and a second-year residency program in Lahore. The majority of its 24 graduates have continued working for the medical center, with the rest taking posts in Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The ASHP News Center spoke with Bhutta; Saba Mazhar, residency program director and member of ASHP's International Accreditation Committee; and Adeel Siddiqui, preceptor and assistant manager of pharmacy to learn more. Why was it important for your hospital to start a pharmacy residency program? Bhutta: Training opportunities for pharmacists were mostly unstandardized; only a few institutions were working toward advanced pharmacy practices aligned with international standards. Our hospital has always believed in strengthening the pharmacy profession and creating meaningful learning opportunities for pharmacists. We had an internal residency-style training program with rotations in ambulatory care, aseptic services, inpatient care, and clinical pharmacy, but we recognized that if we wanted to truly advance clinical pharmacy in Pakistan, we needed a stronger, more structured system. When ASHP introduced the international pharmacy practice residency pathway (IPPRP), we moved forward with accreditation immediately. How did you start your program? Mazhar: We initiated the pharmacy residency program in 2014. At that stage, our focus was on ensuring that core learning experiences were incorporated, particularly those essential for pharmacists working in oncology practice settings. We began with a small cohort of four trainees and a limited scope. However, there was strong enthusiasm and commitment behind the initiative. Despite its modest beginnings, the program played an important role in shifting the mindset of the pharmacy profession locally and demonstrated the value of structured clinical training. How did ASHP help you develop and expand the program? Bhutta: ASHP played a significant role in helping us develop and expand our program. Their standards helped us build a competency-based residency model focused on clinical excellence, leadership, and patient-centered care. We had the privilege of working closely with respected ASHP leaders such as Lynnae Mahaney, Paul Bush, and David Warner, whose guidance and collaboration were invaluable. Their participation in our conferences and symposiums further strengthened our journey. This initiative also encouraged other leading institutions in the area, including Shifa International Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital, to develop similar structured training platforms and pursue accreditation. Today, several organizations are moving in the same direction, which will continue to strengthen pharmacy practice and improve patient care across the country. How did you grow the program over time? Mazhar: We first strengthened the Lahore site by expanding learning experiences, adding more preceptors, and enhancing clinical exposure. Once the program was well-established, we expanded to our Peshawar site and successfully launched the IPPRP there, extending the same quality of structured residency training to another campus. We later introduced the International Advanced Pharmacy Practice Residency Program (IAPPRP), a second year of postgraduate training, becoming the first hospital in the region to offer this advanced level of training. We enroll two pharmacy graduates each year in IPPRP and one in IAPPRP. Five are currently enrolled across Lahore and Peshawar. Our success created momentum nationally. Shifa and Aga Khan hospitals started ASHP-accredited IPPRP programs. We started a residency networking symposium with participation from almost all major hospitals in Pakistan. Tell us more about IAPPRP. Mazhar: From the beginning, our vision was not limited to one year of residency alone. We remained in close contact with the ASHP team and discussed the need for an advanced pathway. As soon as ASHP launched the advanced program in 2022, we immediately started working on implementation. The focus of IAPPRP is to develop leadership skills in second-year residents, enabling them to practice more independently, take on advanced clinical responsibilities, and contribute at a higher level to patient care and pharmacy services. We look forward to achieving full accreditation following an ASHP audit. What are you most proud of regarding these programs and your trainees? Siddiqui: Our residents are gaining visibility globally; their research in quality improvement is getting published in well-reputed journals and their work is recognized and winning awards. We developed a team of board- and ASHP-certified preceptors who are training residents. This program has significantly elevated the level of the pharmacy profession in the country, helping to advance clinical practice standards and professional development. ASHP launches fda-funded initiative to strengthen access to drugs in short supply. Published: April 23, 2026 ASHP has begun the first phase of a multiyear effort to help outsourcing facilities respond more quickly when patients risk losing access to critical medications due to shortages. As part of the project, ASHP will convene a multidisciplinary, multi-specialty committee to develop a priority list of medications most vulnerable to shortages. ASHP is naming a dozen clinicians and supply chain experts to the committee, including pharmacists from multiple specialties, which will establish a matrix score that prioritizes medications based on supply chain vulnerability and clinical need. ASHP received a $3 million grant from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to undertake the work. "This idea of getting multiple specialties together to talk through how to prioritize these drugs is something that could broadly apply to other government initiatives," said Michael Ganio, ASHP's senior director of pharmacy practice and quality. Those initiatives include building a reserve of strategic active pharmaceutical ingredients and investing in domestic manufacturing. As part of the project's second phase, ASHP will identify medications from the prioritized list that are suitable for compounding by 503B outsourcing facilities. A second expert panel will issue requests for proposals and award funding to facilities that proactively research formulations to compound these medications. ASHP will maintain a public library of formulations available to 503B outsourcing facilities interested in compounding drugs that eventually go into shortage. "This effort isn't just about chasing supply," said Brian Cohen, ASHP's director of pharmacy supply chain resilience. "It is about identifying the most vulnerable medications, weighing their clinical importance, and being thoughtful about what can be safely compounded during shortages." Hospitals and clinics use 503B outsourcing facilities to ensure a more reliable supply of compounded and ready-to-administer drugs. Under law, the facilities can also compound copies of commercially available drugs that are on the FDA drug shortages list. But only about 20% of outsourcing facilities' total production is comprised of drugs in shortage, according to the FDA. Significant challenges - from high costs to research demands - limit their ability to respond to shortages effectively. Facilities often need six months to a year to bring products to market - and by then, the medication may have come off the FDA shortages list. Meanwhile, patients face delays in their care. "Our goal is to cut that time substantially," said Ganio. The project will also include an review of prioritized drugs to determine whether there is a risk of counterfeit activity during a period of shortage. For more than two decades, ASHP has actively monitored drug shortages, developed strategies to help members minimize the effects of shortages on pharmacy operations and patient care, and urged policymakers to adopt solutions. ASHP names Samuel Calabrese as executive vice president and CEO. Published: March 19, 2026 The ASHP Board of Directors today announced the appointment of Samuel V. Calabrese, BSPharm, MBA, FASHP, CPEL, as executive vice president and CEO, effective May 1, 2026. Calabrese will become ASHP's fifth CEO in its 84-year history, succeeding longtime CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, ScD (Hon), FASHP, who retired earlier this year. Calabrese brings decades of health-system pharmacy leadership, deep experience in pharmacy training accreditation, and a longstanding commitment to ASHP's mission and the profession. He currently serves as vice president of the ASHP Office of Accreditation Services, overseeing the accreditation processes for more than 3,000 pharmacy residency programs and 250 technician training programs nationwide. Before joining ASHP, Calabrese spent 25 years in the Cleveland Clinic Health System, holding senior leadership roles, including executive chief pharmacy officer, associate chief pharmacy officer and pharmacy administrator, director of inpatient pharmacy services, and pharmacy manager. He also served as residency program director for the Cleveland Clinic's health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency. Calabrese served as faculty for the ASHP Foundation's Pharmacy Leadership Academy and ASHP's Australia Leadership Boot Camp and as a capstone facilitator for ASHP Certified Pharmacy Executive Leaders. He is a past president of the Cleveland Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) and the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) and has been recognized with CSHP's Evlyn Gray Scott Award and OSHP's Walter M. Frazier Award. He holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, an MBA from Cleveland State University, and a certification in executive coaching from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland.
