As Tax Manager, you will report directly to Voleon’s senior leadership responsible for tax matters. This role is a means to make a difference: you will play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations, assisting with tax filings and monitoring, and adapting our approach to align with our evolving business needs. You will collaborate with a talented, accomplished, and experienced group of colleagues from a variety of functions to help shape the future of the firm. As one of the initial members of our tax team, you will support both corporate and fund-level tax work and focus on compliance, monitoring, research, and implementation.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance and Monitoring
- Participate in the development of tax policies and processes that help maintain compliance with applicable tax laws
- Monitor current and impending changes to tax regulation (e.g., changes to Section 174 or Self-employment tax rules) and make appropriate updates to our policies and strategies
- Conduct regular reviews of the firm’s tax framework to ensure alignment with evolving regulatory and business needs
- Tax Filings Review
- Perform detailed reviews of tax paperwork prepared by external vendors or internal teams, including Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and 20+ partnership returns across 10+ states
- Track new filing obligations as Voleon expands to different states and countries
- Assist in the management of Voleon’s relationships with external tax advisors and relevant tax authorities
- Tax Research
- Conduct research on complex tax issues that impact Voleon’s funds and management companies, including nuances of Subchapter K and partnership taxation, employment tax, and regulations in both US and international jurisdictions
- Assist with evaluating the tax implications of expanding into new markets and launching new products
- Advisory and Planning
- Support cross-functional projects that involve partnering with legal, finance, fund accounting, operations, investor relations, business strategy, and senior leadership
Requirements
- 5+ years of tax experience gained from working with an accounting firm, law firm, tax advisory firm, or within the financial services or asset management industry
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is required
- Previous experience in tax work for hedge funds is a plus
- Thrive in fast-paced environments and be able to adjust priorities as needed
- Experience preparing and reviewing Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and Form
- 1065 partnership returns for funds and investors both onshore and offshore, and managing registration of funds in different jurisdictions including state, federal, and international
- Experience preparing and determining elections for tax forms including 475(f) and 8832
- A good understanding of the 871m withholding tax regime and qualified indices is preferred
- International tax experience is preferred
- Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in Accounting, Taxation, Law, Finance, or related fields
The base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $200,000 in the location(s) of this posting. Individual salaries are determined through a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography. Base salary does not include other forms of total compensation such as bonus compensation and other benefits.
