Requirements
  • Must be licensed to work as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri.
  • Must maintain a current registered nurse license and required certifications.
  • Must maintain current Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Must complete annual mandatory requirements, including tuberculosis screening, influenza vaccination, ethics training, safety training, information security, abuse and neglect coursework, blood-borne pathogens training when required, annual competency, age/population-specific competency when applicable, orientation competency when applicable, and service-specific requirements.
  • Must be able to work day-shift hours, including a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. schedule, and irregular hours as required.
  • Must be able to occasionally stand or walk for prolonged periods and lift, position, push, or transfer patients.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency and crisis situations and work in environments involving potential exposure to blood-borne diseases and other unpleasant elements.
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive nursing admission, transfer, post-operative, and ongoing assessments and document findings accurately and completely.
  • Assess and document patient and family education and discharge needs throughout hospitalization.
  • Establish, coordinate, evaluate, and modify plans of care based on assessment data, diagnoses, laboratory data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Identify short- and long-term patient-care goals and formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Incorporate disease-specific evidence-based practice into nursing care plans and documentation.
  • Provide and document nursing interventions based on patient needs, the plan of care, and changes in patient status.
  • Collaborate with health team members to coordinate daily plans of care for assigned patients.
  • Provide, coordinate, and communicate patient care using accurate handoff reports, including bedside shift reports, ticket-to-ride reports, SBAR, daily huddles, and patient-care conferences.
  • Administer and accurately document medications according to policies and procedures.
  • Monitor, maintain, and document intravenous fluids, blood, blood products, and parenteral nutrition according to policies and procedures.
  • Complete referrals and request consultations for special patient or family needs, equipment, or information.
  • Assess patients for restraint alternatives, apply restraints according to approved procedures, monitor patient responses, provide required care, and document restraint use.
  • Assess and manage pain, incorporate cultural and spiritual beliefs into pain-management plans, implement pain-control techniques, and involve patients and families in planning.
  • Recognize and report possible abuse or neglect and take appropriate action to support patient safety.
  • Clarify, transcribe, and implement physician orders accurately and in a timely manner, documenting read-back of telephone or verbal orders.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and treatments as requested or delegate appropriate activities to care partners.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition, clinical parameters, risks, and diagnoses and take appropriate nursing action.
  • Implement infection-control bundles and fall- and skin-injury-prevention interventions, including completing audits when indicated.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care, medications, treatments, procedures, and patient or family education and document the results.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition and variations from care or treatment through appropriate channels and policies.
  • Adhere to clinical, technical, quality, safety, infection-control, and hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards.
  • Participate in learning experiences, staff meetings, committees, shared governance, work teams, nursing research, performance improvement, occurrence reviews, and quality-indicator activities.
  • Adapt to changing work demands and provide assistance and support to peers, coworkers, and other team members.
  • Orient or precept new employees, function as a resource to coworkers and the healthcare team, delegate care appropriately, and teach students or new staff nurses.
  • Provide age-appropriate care by assessing and interpreting age-specific data, adapting communication, and involving families or significant others in decisions.
  • Provide timely, high-quality, courteous, respectful, confidential, and cost-effective care to patients and families.
  • Use resources efficiently, recommend practices that minimize waste, document chargeable supplies and equipment, and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Maintain safe, clean, organized, and therapeutic patient-care and work environments.
  • Educate patients, families, and visitors about procedures, medications, monitoring equipment, infection-control practices, and the plan of care.
  • Provide handoff reports before leaving the unit with a patient or for another errand.
