- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A West Virginia Point of Care Technician license must be completed as established by the department.
- The ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator is required.
- The ability to use Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel is required.
- The ability to use fax machines, printers, and other office equipment is required.
- The employee must be able to lift and move materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds and stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for the entire shift.

- The employee may be required to travel between facilities or buildings and work various shifts based on departmental needs.
- Perform basic laboratory functions, including specimen processing, customer service, and data entry, in support of patient care.
- Collect, process, store, and transport blood, body fluid, and tissue specimens.
- Perform clerical functions, including faxing, copying, mailing reports, and answering phones professionally.
- Prepare specimens for basic diagnostic procedures that contribute to accurate and reproducible patient results.
- Operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing according to standard operating procedures.
- Prepare reagents and solutions required for specimen processing and testing according to standard operating procedures.
- Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to assess the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment or instrumentation.
- Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Report test results accurately and in a timely manner.
- Use time, materials, and resources economically while prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to support patient care and efficiency.
- Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting work organization according to test-ordering status.
- Communicate unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor or Manager.
- Communicate unusual medical or technical problems and unusual patient results.
- Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Complete six to eight weeks of microbiology training on the day shift, then work the 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. afternoon shift with rotating weekends and holidays.
- Phlebotomy certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician is preferred.
- Six months of phlebotomy, laboratory assistant, or cytopreparatory experience is preferred.
