Cataloging and Metadata Librarian

Arlington County’s Public Library is seeking an innovative Cataloging and Metadata Librarian to join the Collections, Access & Technology’s Cataloging and Metadata Team. This position will work closely with colleagues to ensure our collections and services meet the needs of our community and to support the management of the quality control of the cataloging and processing of all library materials ensuring all proper cataloging standards and procedures are followed.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university; and 

• Experience providing library services with at least one year of working for a public library.

Please note: Employees may be hired up to the senior level which requires significant experience, or may be hired at lower levels which requires considerable experience at the journey level and some experience at the entry level. 

Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants will one or more of the following: 

• Experience of automated library cataloging, metadata standards, authority control, and acquisitions processes, such as DDC, AACR2, USMARC, LCSH, OCLC, LCSH, RDA, LCC, LCNAF; 

• Experience working with an Integrated Library System and Online Public Access Catalog/ Discovery Layer, specifically knowledge with Koha and Aspen is preferred;

• Proven ability to use cataloging tools, such as MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion, LC ClassWeb.

Additional Information:

Work hours: Part-time, 30 hours per week. 

Must be able to push heavy book carts, lift 25 pounds, and stand for extended periods of time.

Specific duties include:

• Performing original and copy cataloging in all formats;

• Providing upkeep and maintenance of the library’s cataloging, authority control, receiving, and processing workflows;

• Using Aspen Discovery to implement changes and enhancements to the library databases;

• Ensuring that print, non-print, and electronic resources are accessible to borrowers in the most timely and cost-effective manner possible;

• Keeping abreast of emerging trends, innovations and best practices affecting library systems, catalogs and of methods of electronic resources management and metadata standards;

• Coordinating database policies and procedures for the library system;

• Performing database maintenance practices;

• Incorporating new methods of leveraging technology for collecting, organizing, and providing access to library materials;

• Supporting the cataloging and metadata needs of the Center for Local History;

• Supporting the centralized donations, Donation Processing Team, and system-wide bookstore operations

The ideal candidate will have the following:

• Flexibility, knowledge, and dedication to the mission of the division and the library by making the collections accessible through an accurate and usable catalog;

• Knowledge of integrated library systems and statistical analysis;

• Foreign language cataloging experience; and

• Understanding of typical collection development, acquisitions, and processing practices of a large library.
