Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • At least one year of relevant experience is required.
  • The employee must be enrolled in or have completed the A-STEP online self-study modules within two years of the date of hire, or must be enrolled in or have completed a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care program.
  • The employee must demonstrate proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Office.
  • The employee must be able to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • The employee must demonstrate critical thinking, the ability to work with minimal supervision, effective written and verbal communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.
  • The employee must follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.
Responsibilities
  • Administer sleep studies to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders.
  • Perform routine patient assessments, score sleep records, document test results, and collect and transmit biological specimens for analysis.
  • Monitor brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing variables, and blood oxygen levels during sleep using specialized recording equipment.
  • Support treatment of sleep-related problems by helping patients use devices for breathing problems during sleep and develop good sleep habits.
  • Gather and analyze patient information and physician orders to ensure the appropriate test is performed.
  • Explain sleep study procedures to patients.
  • Prepare, calibrate, adjust, and maintain equipment required for testing, including portable monitoring equipment.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and perform physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals.
  • Perform positive airway pressure interface fitting and desensitization, administer positive airway pressure at the correct pressure level, and administer oxygen when required.
  • Follow protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Tests, Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests, parasomnia studies, positive airway pressure, and oxygen titration.
  • Perform data acquisition while monitoring tracing quality, and identify, correct, and document artifacts.
  • Document sleep stages, clinical events, procedure changes, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Implement interventions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic treatment.
  • Follow lights-on procedures to verify collected-data integrity and complete data collection.
  • Provide age-specific care, assessment, treatment, and education for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data downloads.
  • Provide patient education and instruction for out-of-center sleep testing.
  • Follow cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.
  • Perform routine equipment care and maintenance, inventory evaluation, and sleep-study-related inventory maintenance.
  • Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
  • Respond to sleep patients' procedural inquiries and provide appropriate information.
  • Adhere to sleep-center policies related to quality assurance and professional standards of conduct.
  • Assist the medical director or manager with sleep-center operations.
