Requirements
- Five years of related experience and/or training.
- Experience with water, storm, or sewer pipe installation and grading for roadways.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, plans, blueprints, profiles, contract drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, work on uneven ground, and frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in or around high, precarious places, shafts, and tunnels, with occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise.
Responsibilities
- Review documents and plans and resolve questions before proceeding with activities.
- Examine blueprints, plans, and profiles to determine structure dimensions.
- Direct and train the crew to perform work according to contract drawings and specifications within the job's production budget.
- Act as the OSHA-defined competent person on the job.
- Select materials to ensure project conformance and plan ahead so appropriate materials are available when needed.
- Plan activity sequences with the Superintendent and Project Engineer using two-week schedule planning.
- Assign workers to tasks including operating machinery and equipment, installing trench boxes, and installing pipes.
- Inspect subcontractor work for conformance with specifications.
- Supervise workers engaged in utility installations and grading for roadwork.
- Study production schedules and estimate worker-hour requirements for job assignments.
- Maintain crew contact information and know crew members by name.
- Conduct daily crew huddles, explain the work and its execution, and train inexperienced crew members.
- Interpret company policies and enforce company disciplinary procedures when addressing employee problems.
- Evaluate ongoing job safety issues and make necessary changes.
- Enforce safety regulations and the use of personal protective equipment.
- Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Recommend improvements to production methods, equipment performance, and product quality.
- Suggest changes to working conditions and equipment use to improve crew efficiency.
- Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in resolving them.
- Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
- Maintain accurate time and production records, including verified quantities and detailed work locations, and submit timesheets on time.
- Keep the job team informed of progress and problems.
- Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
- Set up machines and equipment and supervise their use.
- Maintain a detailed daily job diary.
- Hold meaningful weekly crew safety meetings and file attendance and content reports.
- Perform the activities of supervised workers.
- Minimize punch-list items and finish work activities.
- Provide overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the crew.
- Directly supervise three to five non-supervisory employees and may manage one lead person supervising two to three additional employees.
- Train employees, plan and assign work, appraise performance, reward and discipline employees, address complaints, and resolve problems.
