Requirements
  • A master's degree in Political Science or a master's degree in a closely related field with at least 18 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in Political Science.
  • Knowledge of Political Science and demonstrated knowledge and integration of appropriate teaching practices for different learning styles.
  • Strong written and oral communication, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and computer-use skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Blackboard, Owens email, and other required programs.
  • Ability to integrate varied methodologies to facilitate student learning and understand the needs of community college students.
  • Ability to manage a classroom, organize and present material, design lessons and activities, monitor student behavior and performance, follow instructions, meet deadlines, recognize students' strengths and weaknesses in the discipline, provide learning-facilitating feedback, and evaluate student work fairly using Department guidelines.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, patience, flexibility, and professional and collegial behavior.
Responsibilities
  • Teach Political Science classes to undergraduate students through classroom and/or online instruction.
  • Develop course syllabi using the assigned syllabus shell, including evaluation procedures and assignment calendars aligned with the course outline.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes during scheduled times using Department-approved texts, course content, and best practices.
  • Meet all classes on scheduled dates, arrive on time, and hold classes for the fully allotted time; online instructors must follow Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction.
  • Use appropriate classroom-management techniques and technology.
  • Use the College course-management system for assigned courses and department matters.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite and other Owens-system-compatible and approved programs.
  • Submit requested electronic documents, including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other required files, to the Department course-management site.
  • Access Owens email at least every other day, respond to required messages within 48 hours, check the campus mailbox weekly, respond to student inquiries promptly, and meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, evaluative measures, and activities; assign grades; return graded work and post grades within the stated timeframe.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, report attendance by the published deadline, and maintain an accurate electronic grade book.
  • Report final grades to the Records Office by the deadline and submit electronic grade-book and attendance copies to the Department course-management site.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the College.
  • Attend Department and College workshops, training sessions, development activities, and meetings as needed.
  • Participate in student-learning assessment activities and perform other assigned departmental duties.
  • Support the College, School of Arts and Sciences, and their missions, visions, and core values.
