Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • For Title I schools, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have either six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the proper renewal process; training will be provided if needed.
  • Have considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Google Apps.
  • Have working knowledge of successful instructional delivery methods and general classroom activities and routines.
  • Protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and other applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Recognize and support students with varied backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form using varied communication techniques and tools.
  • Constantly monitor and supervise the safety and well-being of students.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, parents, businesses, community agencies, and the public.
  • Sit and stand throughout the workday and perform medium physical work, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
Responsibilities
  • Support and assist teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students’ Individualized Education Plans, while maintaining an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assist teachers with planning and organizing, evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting student progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with implementing low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth in the assigned area.
  • Coordinate, assist, and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Provide for students’ special health care needs, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, lifting, positioning, transferring, seizure-control activities, feeding, and adaptive equipment needs.
  • Assist with wheelchairs, crutches, prosthetic devices, orthotic devices, hearing aids, braille, assistive listening devices, and augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Provide behavioral assistance using Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • For SATA assignments, serve as a one-on-one instructional assistant to a student with severe to profound learning disabilities and complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Use standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs, including physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disabilities or impairments requiring specialized services or accommodations.
