WSECU names Zhu as next CEO.

WSECU names Zhu as next CEO. Harry Zhu will succeed Gary Swindler, who is retiring after 37 years at the $5.1 billion Washington credit union. Washington State Employees Credit Union has chosen Harry Zhu as its next president and chief executive, turning to a veteran credit union executive as the $5.1 billion-asset institution prepares for a leadership change and approaches its 70th anniversary. Zhu will join WSECU on Sept. 21, succeeding Gary Swindler, who will retire next month after a 37-year career at the credit union. The board selected Zhu after a nationwide search. "We are excited for Harry to build on our past success and elevate WSECU to the next level of member service and organizational growth," said Vikki Smith, WSECU's board chair. She cited Zhu's executive experience, people-focused leadership and record of helping financial institutions adapt to a changing industry. Zhu most recently served as chief executive of USAlliance Federal Credit Union in Rye, N.Y. Before that, he spent 13 years at Alliant Credit Union, the $20 billion digital-only institution, where he held senior positions including chief retail lending officer, chief financial officer and chief risk officer. During his tenure at Alliant, Zhu helped lead a period of substantial expansion. The credit union grew from $7 billion to $18 billion in assets, while more than doubling its membership and improving its member banking experience, according to WSECU. "I am honored to be joining the team at WSECU," Zhu said. He said the credit union's focus on members, appetite for innovation and role as a community partner attracted him to the position. WSECU, based in Olympia, has 323,382 members and $5.1 billion in assets. The credit union earned $6.3 million in the first six months of 2026, down from $11.4 million in the same period a year earlier, according to National Credit Union Administration call report data. Story continued below... Free pamphlet. Youth banking: Growing the next generation of account holders. Financial habits are formed early, but most financial tools are designed for adults. As a result, families often rely on cash, shared cards, or disconnected apps to teach money management, making it difficult to balance independence with oversight. At the same time, younger generations expect intuitive digital experiences, creating a gap between how they interact with money and how financial services are delivered. Financial institutions need age-appropriate solutions that engage younger account holders while supporting parents and caregivers. The leadership change comes as Zhu is expected to focus on member value, financial performance and employee engagement. WSECU will also enter its 70th anniversary year in 2027. Swindler's departure marks the end of one of the longer leadership careers in the credit union industry. He joined WSECU as a loan officer and eventually became chief executive. "We can't thank Gary enough for his contributions over 37 years - starting as a loan officer and rising to the executive office," Smith said. Under Swindler, she said, WSECU expanded its digital services and branch network and navigated the workplace changes brought on by the pandemic. Zhu and Swindler will work together during the transition before Swindler's retirement. Zhu holds master's degrees in business administration and engineering from the University of Michigan and will live and work in the Olympia area. "We are excited for Harry to build on our past success and elevate WSECU to the next level of member service and organizational growth." - Vikki Smith Board Chair WSECU Ken McCarthy is manager of marketing communications at Tyfone, where he monitors the credit union industry and contributes to conversations shaping its future. He previously covered credit unions and community banking for American Banker and S&P Global Market Intelligence. He holds a journalism degree from Point Park University and has more than 15 years of experience covering financial services. He is also the author of three literary fiction novels.

WSECU named to Forbes Best-In-State 2026 list - press release.

WSECU named to Forbes Best-In-State 2026 list - press release. July 22, 2026 July 22, 2026 (Olympia, Wash.) - WSECU has been named a top credit union in Washington state on the Forbes Best-in-State Credit Unions list for 2026, the sixth consecutive year it has earned a place on the prestigious list. WSECU is the only credit union to land on the list of Washington's best credit unions for the last six consecutive years. "We set ourselves apart with great service and listening to members at every step of their financial journeys," said Ann Flannigan, VP of Public Relations at WSECU. "It's a true honor to be recognized by such a trusted source based on member feedback. Being the only Washington credit union on the list for the sixth year running is a tribute to the consistent care and commitment our employees bring to their jobs every day." Flannigan added that consumers have many exceptional credit union options across Washington for their banking and the Forbes list is a guide to find a not-for-profit cooperative in their community. The not-for-profit cooperative was recognized by its members and communities to earn a place on the list. Forbes and Statista Inc. identified Best-In-State Credit Unions 2026 based on an independent survey of approximately 26,000 US consumers who were asked how satisfied they were and how likely they were to recommend financial institutions they know from their own financial experiences and those of friends and family. Survey respondents were also asked to rate the financial institutions on factors including trust, customer service, digital tools, quality of financial advice given, and whether fees were transparent and reasonable. Statista also gathered more than 1.2 million publicly available reviews and ratings online about each financial institution between February 2023 and March 2026, accounting for 20% of the total scoring for each institution. Nationally, 246 credit unions were recognized in the list. WSECU will celebrate 69 years of helping members achieve greater financial wellness this July. Since its beginning in 1957, the credit union has grown to over $5.4 billion in assets and serves more than 315,000 members through its 25 branches, the Contact Center and digital channels.

Salal Credit Union Announces New CEO

Salal Credit Union announces new CEO. * john stearns * 5 hrs ago. Salal Credit Union has named its next president and CEO, who will take over effective Jan. 1. Kevin Skinner was selected by the credit union's board of directors after a national search conducted in partnership with Smith & Wilkinson, the credit union announced today in a news release. Current CEO Russ Rosendal is retiring at year end after nearly 17 years with the credit union. Skinner will join Salal Dec. 1 to begin the leadership transition. Salal, based in Seattle, has branches in Bellevue and Tukwila, plus two in Seattle. As of June 30, it reported total assets approaching $1.2 billion, almost 61,000 members, and 227 full-time employees, according to the National Credit Union Administration. Skinner joins Salal from Washington State Employees Credit Union, where he served as vice president of retail lending, overseeing consumer- and residential-lending production, operations, credit risk, and product development. He has more than 25 years of experience in financial services, including leadership roles at Umpqua and HomeStreet banks, USAA, and Washington Mutual. At Umpqua, Skinner led the home-lending division, managing nearly 700 employees across a $7 billion annual business, a $5-billion portfolio of permanent and construction loans, and a $15-billion servicing operation. His career also has included strong advocacy for affordable housing and member-focused innovation, including service on the Freddie Mac Regional Lender Advisory Board, the Mortgage Bankers Association Secondary and Capital Markets Committee, and the ABA Mortgage Markets and Lending Technology Committee. He currently serves as treasurer of the board of delegates for Homestead Community Land Trust, which creates permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income households in King and Pierce counties, Salal's release said. "Kevin brings extensive experience leading large, complex financial organizations while maintaining a strong commitment to the cooperative values that define our credit union," Brian Luong, chair of Salal's board of directors, said in a statement. "His ability to build high-performing teams, drive innovation, and lead with purpose gives us great confidence in his capacity to build on Russ's legacy and guide Salal into its next era of growth and service." Skinner said he was honored to join the organization. "Salal's vision for sustainable growth, innovation, and expanding access to financial wellness aligns perfectly with my own values and experience," he said in the release. "I look forward to building on that success and continuing to expand the ways we serve our members and communities." Founded in 1948, Salal's name comes from the Salal plant, which the credit union's website said "is a tenacious and adaptable evergreen that thrives in challenging conditions" and has long been used by the Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest for nourishment and healing.
