- One of the listed laboratory credentials must be obtained within one year after hire: American Association of Bioanalyst MT(AAB), American Medical Technologist MT(AMT), American Society for Clinical Pathology MT(ASCP) or MB(ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel CLS(NCA), or an equivalent categorical registration in blood banking, chemistry, cytometry, hematology, medical laboratory science, microbiology, or molecular biology.

- Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and the chemical processes and transformations they undergo.
- Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cell function, interactions, and relationships with the environment.

- Ability to analyze, verify, and manipulate clinical and laboratory data.
- Ability to work under precise quantity and quality requirements and follow safety, environmental, and infection-control practices.
- Ability to perform work involving biohazardous conditions, radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of frequent bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking, with occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Conduct clinical laboratory tests and analyses in hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis.
- Analyze biological-material samples for chemical content or reaction.
- Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components.
- Cultivate and isolate microbial organisms, assist in identifying them, and conduct tests on them.
- Obtain, cut, stain, and mount biological material on slides for microscopic study and diagnosis.
- Select and prepare specimens and media for cell culture using aseptic technique.
- Study blood samples to determine cell counts, cell morphology, blood group type, and transfusion compatibility.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, and computer-controlled analyzers.
- Promote safety, environmental, and infection-control practices.
