- Experience and interest in fitness.
- Ability to properly demonstrate all equipment in the wellness center.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- A minimum age of 18 years old.
- Valid CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification, or the ability to obtain it within three months.
- Ability to work at both the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Summit YMCA branches.
- Assist members with the safe and proper use of equipment in the fitness center, STRIVE room, weight room, and stretching areas.
- Conduct new member wellness orientations and demonstrate correct equipment use and basic exercise form.
- Monitor member activity to ensure proper usage and provide guidance, modifications, and encouragement when needed.
- Maintain clean, organized wellness spaces by wiping down equipment, removing stray items, and ensuring weights and accessories are properly stored.
- Rotate throughout designated wellness areas to provide visibility, support, and proactive assistance to members.
- Provide friendly, helpful, approachable, and attentive customer service.
- Enforce wellness center rules and maintain a safe environment for members.
- Replenish and maintain cleaning supplies for member use throughout each shift.
- Report equipment or maintenance concerns promptly to the Supervisor.
- Provide effective tours to prospective members and share the YMCA’s mission and programs.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures as outlined by the supervisor and employee handbook.
- Represent the YMCA professionally through personal appearance, communication, and conduct, and wear the required staff attire.
- A genuine passion for fitness and an interest in helping others feel confident and supported.
- Ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Following a comprehensive building renovation completed in 2023, the elevator project represents the next chapter in that investment, ensuring safe, reliable, and accessible service for every member who walks through the doors. Thanks to a generous $40,000 grant from The Summit Foundation, the Summit Area YMCA is able to move forward with this essential initiative, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to serving the whole community with dignity and care. The modernization project is particularly significant for seniors, individuals with special needs, and families who depend on elevator access to participate in programs throughout the building. With Phase 1 currently underway and completion expected in January 2027, the Y is committed to ensuring access remains available throughout the process. Fleet Feet stepping up for Love & Legacy 5K. Summit Area YMCA is excited to partner with Fleet Feet Summit for this year's Love & Legacy 5K, bringing together two community organizations that share a passion for health, connection, and helping people stay active. As part of the partnership, Fleet Feet Summit will provide the prizes for the race's overall male and female champions. Each winner will receive a $250 Fleet Feet gift certificate, valid through July 1 - perfect for gearing up with the footwear and performance apparel to power their next run. Fleet Feet will also host the official Love & Legacy 5K packet pickup at their Summit store on Thursday, April 30 from 4:30-6:45 p.m. Participants can pick up their race materials, check out the latest running gear, and connect with fellow runners as excitement builds for race day. Led by a dedicated run coach, the program blends virtual guidance with select in-person workouts, giving participants the structure, motivation, and community support to build endurance and confidence heading into race day. The program will be offered at $75 per participant. This program pairs perfectly with its Summit Area YMCA Couch to 5K training plan, which helps beginners take their first steps toward completing a 5K. Together, the two training opportunities create a welcoming path for runners of all experience levels - whether someone is starting from scratch or looking to elevate their performance and arrive at the starting line feeling strong.
