Requirements
  • An MD or DO degree is required.
  • Board certification approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association is required where applicable to the duties performed.
  • An active, unrestricted medical license to practice medicine or a health profession is required.
  • The candidate must be located in a United States state or territory when conducting utilization review or an appeals consideration, unless expressly allowed by state or federal law or regulation, and may not be located on a United States military base, vessel, or embassy.
  • At least 10 years of clinical experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For Health Solutions and Carelon organizations, at least 5 years of experience providing health care is required.
  • Additional experience may be required by state contracts or regulations when the Medical Director role is filed by a state agency.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct appeal reviews for physical health medical services to ensure appropriate and cost-effective medical care.
  • Support clinicians in providing timely and consistent responses to members and providers.
  • Provide guidance on the clinical operational aspects of a program.
  • Conduct peer-to-peer clinical case reviews with attending physicians or other ordering providers to discuss review determinations, when required.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant for other company areas.
  • Represent the company to external entities and serve on internal or external committees, when required.
  • Chair company committees, when required.
  • Interpret medical policies and clinical guidelines.
  • Develop and propose new medical policies based on changes in healthcare, when required.
  • Lead, develop, direct, and implement clinical and non-clinical activities affecting healthcare quality, cost, and outcomes.
  • Identify and develop innovation opportunities to increase effectiveness and quality.
  • Develop and implement programs to improve quality, cost, and outcomes, when required.
  • Provide clinical consultation and serve as a clinical or strategic advisor to enhance clinical operations, when required.
  • Identify cost-of-care opportunities, when required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Board certification in Cardiology is strongly preferred.
  • Utilization Management or Appeals experience is preferred.
