Requirements
- An accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education and experience is required for the Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee and Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 roles.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee candidates must be eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 18 months of hire.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 candidates must hold current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or an equivalent certifying organization, or certification from a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 candidates must have one year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee; up to one year of clinical testing experience in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count.
- Candidates must be familiar with Immunology Laboratory procedures, quick reference guides, standard operating procedures, departmental Environment of Care policies, workplace safety protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and departmental and divisional compliance requirements.
- Candidates must be able to perform clinical laboratory testing accurately and precisely, evaluate quality-control results, troubleshoot instruments, manage assigned workloads, and maintain a safe laboratory environment.
- Candidates must be able to use laboratory computer systems and programs, including instrument-linked computers, Sunquest Laboratory Information System, Lab Medicine server systems, UW Medicine systems such as Epic, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, MyChem, and MediaLab.
- Candidates must be able to participate in technical competency assessments and continuing education programs.
Responsibilities
- Perform clinical laboratory tests used in screening, diagnosing, and treating pathological conditions.
- Perform assigned laboratory testing accurately and precisely on patient, research, and proficiency-testing samples using automated immunoanalyzers, automated immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay processors, electrophoresis apparatus and scanners, immunofluorescent microscopes, Magpix Luminex instruments, Euroimmun Immunblot, and manual assays.
- Perform manual enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, radial immunodiffusion, line blot assays, cold agglutinin titers, viscosity measurements, cryoglobulin and cryofibrinogen testing, and subjective immunofluorescence microscopy for anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, and other cytoplasmic antibodies on tissue substrates.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance procedures on Immunology instruments according to standard operating procedures.
- Run quality controls according to standard operating procedures, evaluate quality-control results, and take appropriate steps when quality-control failures occur.
- Troubleshoot instrument issues and interact appropriately with technical support services.
- Work independently, manage assigned workloads, ask for help when needed, assist others, and work on projects when scheduled assignments are completed.
- Participate in laboratory quality-improvement projects and method-validation studies.
- Participate in laboratory staff meetings and review intralaboratory communications, including Microsoft Teams postings, meeting notes, and procedure or job-aid changes.
- Enter patient and quality-control data into the Laboratory Information System and notify Client Support Services to fax results as needed.
- Monitor reagent inventories and ensure supplies arrive in time for validation studies before clinical testing.
- Monitor quality-control materials and ensure new supplies are checked out and ready for use.
- Answer questions from other laboratories and providers about testing services offered by the Immunology Laboratory.
- Train and teach new employees, medical students, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology residents, and Medical Laboratory Scientist program students.
- Participate in technical competency assessment programs and continuing education programs as scheduled.
- Follow departmental Environment of Care policies, workplace safety protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and standard operating procedures regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
