AIG executive chair and former CEO Zaffino set to exit for Palantir.

AIG executive chair and former CEO Zaffino set to exit for Palantir. AIG said early Wednesday that its former chief executive officer and current executive chair Peter Zaffino will be leaving the board effective Sept. 15 to join Palantir Technologies Inc. as global head of financial services. Zaffino had just transitioned to the position of executive chair on June 1. Prior to that, he had been AIG CEO since taking over in March 2021, succeeding Brian Duperreault. Eric Anderson, most recently a member of Aon's executive committee, became the AIG's CEO on June 1. AIG announced the succession plan in January. Zaffino will assume a role with AIG as senior advisor, the company said. To take his place on the board, AIG said John Rice, lead independent director, will serve as chair when Zaffino departs. Rice in a statement said AIG under Zaffino's leadership "strengthened its competitive position and created significant long-term value for shareholders." "On behalf of the AIG Board of Directors, we are grateful that AIG will continue to benefit from Peter's guidance and advice." Rice added. Rice has been lead independent director at AIG since the start of 2023. Previously, he was non-executive chairman of GE Gas Power from 2018 to 2020. Rice was president and CEO of the GE Global Growth Organization for seven years. Analytics software and data integration company Palantir said Zaffino will "drive growth and transformational impact across Palantir's financial services business, including insurance companies, banks, asset managers, private equity firms, and other financial institutions" once he starts at the company on Jan. 15, 2027. "Peter has spent his career challenging inertia and rejecting incrementalism within large enterprises. We partnered to deploy our products to create actual alpha within one of the most interesting and complex institutions in the world. We are fortunate that he is joining us," said Alex Karp, co-founder and CEO of Palantir. Under Zaffino, AIG developed a partnership with Palantir to establish an "agentic AI ecosystem" to improve the underwriting process at the insurer. Zaffino had set some expectations from using AI agents but later said its capabilities were much greater than anticipated. AIG recently launched Lloyd's Syndicate 2479 in a partnership with Amwins and Blackstone, marking the first time AIG deployed gen AI for a special purpose vehicle (SPV). With Palantir, large language models were used to determine whether Amwin's program portfolio aligned with the risk appetite of Syndicate 2479. Zaffino said AIG has a "strong pipeline of SPV opportunities." Was this article valuable? Chad is National News Editor at Insurance Journal. Aon CEO says insurance broker seeks to build 'premiere middle market platform' with purchase of rival USI.

Aon CEO says insurance broker seeks to build 'premiere middle market platform' with purchase of rival USI. Aug 31, 2026 - 19:17 Insurance broker Aon announced on Monday it will purchase rival USI Insurance Services from private equity firm KKR. The $17 billion deal, which will be funded by Aon with new debt, is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter, subject to regulatory approvals. CEO Greg Case in an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Monday said that the merger will establish the "premier U.S. middle-market platform." "This means we're going to be in a position to bring world class solutions to the underserved U.S. middle market, and... set a new standard of client leadership for the 200,000 middle-market companies in the U.S. and their 48 million employees," he said. The acquisition for Aon builds on the company's purchase of NFP in 2024, another insurance broker focused on the U.S. middle market. An office building with the Aon logo is seen amid the easing of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions in the Central Business District of Sydney, Australia, June 3, 2020. Loren Elliott | Reuters USI, according to a press release announcing the deal, is the tenth largest insurance broker in the U.S. The company has more than $3 billion in annual revenue, and more than 10,500 employees. Once a deal is closed, USI CEO Mike Sicard will transition to Aon's president and global CEO of middle market. "Joining Aon represents a truly energizing next chapter for our firm and an opportunity to accelerate our momentum as part of the Aon United platform," Sicard said in the release. "Our firms share strong, one-firm cultures with a deep commitment to working together to bring the best of our capabilities to clients." Shares of Aon slipped about 1% in premarket trading Monday. But despite the initial slide, Case said the opportunity to serve the middle market at the scale the company now can through the acquisition has tremendous value potential for shareholders. "Maybe the greatest I've seen in my 20-year career as CEO," he said.

Aon acquires USI Insurance Services from KKR for $17 billion.

Aon acquires USI Insurance Services from KKR for $17 billion. Cris Tolomia Aon agreed to acquire USI Insurance Services from KKR and other shareholders for $17 billion in cash, the company said Monday, extending its push into the U.S. middle-market insurance segment following its $13 billion purchase of NFP in 2024. USI ranks as the tenth largest U.S. insurance broker, generating approximately $3 billion in annual revenue and employing more than 10,500 people across close to 200 offices nationwide. The Valhalla, New York-based firm offers property and casualty, employee benefits, personal risk, and retirement services to mid-sized businesses. Aon said the acquisition would strengthen its foothold in the U.S. middle-market segment - a space it values at more than $40 billion - while also broadening its reach into the excess and surplus, or E&S, insurance segment, which accounts for 26% of U.S. commercial property and casualty premiums and has been among the industry's fastest-growing lines. "USI will substantially enhance our middle-market footprint and expand access for our firm in the E&S segment," Aon CEO Greg Case said in a statement. Following the close of the transaction, USI Chairman and CEO Mike Sicard will become president of Aon and global CEO of its middle-market business, reporting to Case. "Our firms share strong, one-firm cultures with a deep commitment to working together to bring the best of our capabilities to clients," Sicard said in a statement. Aon expects to fund the acquisition entirely through new debt and said it anticipates remaining investment-grade rated. The company said it does not plan to repurchase shares in the near term as it prioritizes paying down debt. The deal is expected to add to Aon's adjusted earnings per share in 2028 and is projected to generate $395 million in annual run-rate net adjusted EBITDA from revenue and cost synergies across the combined middle-market platform, the company said. The deal was signed on August 30, 2026, according to an SEC filing. Closing is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. For KKR, the sale represents a significant exit. The private equity firm originally took USI private alongside Canadian pension fund Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec in a $4.3 billion transaction in 2014, according to CNBC. KKR reported that the exit delivered approximately six times its return on a 2017 investment and a 3.4 times return on capital across the full life of its USI position. On the advisory side, BofA Securities and Citi worked with Aon, while KKR turned to Goldman Sachs, Insurance Advisory Partners, and Morgan Stanley, according to CNBC.
