- A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, three years of college plus one year of medical technology training, a Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences plus one year of clinical laboratory work experience, or successful completion of the HEW proficiency examination.
- Qualification through education, training, and experience to perform assigned routine and special laboratory tests.
- Ability to supervise and teach others.
- Ability to evaluate procedures, equipment, and people, including peers and subordinates.
- Ability to work independently and recognize technical or instrumental problems, present alternatives, and determine solutions.
- Ability to perform complex analyses involving multiple steps and variables.
- Ability to communicate facts and ideas to people inside and outside the laboratory.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, instruments, and their interrelationships.

- Ability to rotate between laboratory sections, shifts, and satellite locations.
- Compliance with OSHA requirements and Springfield Clinic policies and training.
- Perform routine, special, and automated tests in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, and immunology.
- Set up, read, and report bacteriology culture results.
- Make and read smears.
- Perform and document prescribed quality-control procedures for all tests.
- Draw blood samples.
- Use, maintain, and troubleshoot complex laboratory instruments.
- Recognize test interdependencies and conditions that affect results, correct errors, and investigate and resolve problems.
- Develop new laboratory methods and techniques under minimal supervision.
- Maintain reagent inventories, request supplies, and prepare reagents as needed.
- Teach laboratory procedures to new laboratory personnel.
- Perform procedures according to the laboratory procedure manual.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area.
- Assist physicians as needed and report test results to authorized personnel.
- Fill in at satellite locations, print PE-7 logs, and record workload.
- Participate in continuing education programs.
- Comply with incident-reporting policies and perform other assigned duties.
- Provide customer service in accordance with the Springfield Clinic customer-service philosophy.
